It’s always great to choose a present for the kids that they love, but it’s even more great when it’s useful too, and a useful present is exactly what we were able to give them last week! As they are getting older, the kids are spending more time on our games console, which is firmly planted in the lounge – there’s no way they’re having one in the bedroom! Unfortunately for them, they have had to sit on the floor in the lounge when they’re playing – they like to have a snack or a drink at the same time, and I have a strict ‘no eating or drinking on the new settee’ rule. For the time being, it’s working and I have a stain-free sofa, and I intend to keep it that way!
The thing is, they don’t find the floor hugely comfortable, especially as we have a hard wood floor, but so far, it’s not been too bad as they haven’t played for long. But as time goes on and they spend more time, not only on the console but also watching films, we’ve had to re-think. We don’t have the space in the lounge for gaming chairs and they aren’t the most attractive of seats, and folding chairs don’t tend to be much comfier than the floor, so we decided beanbags would be the way to go.
The Xavier Bean Bag Seats from Zurleys seemed absolutely perfect for us – they are large bean bags and are a pillow type shape, rather than the usual ‘blob’ shape that you usually see, so we thought would last the kids well beyond childhood and into their teenage years. The other benefit of larger one is that they’re big enough to bring out as extra seating when we have people over at the house. They are available in three vivid colours, meaning the kids could each choose their favourite colour, and they are made from a super practical, easily wipeable fabric. They are available in pink, green or orange and measure 130cm x 100cm x 25cm.
The bean bags arrived within a few days of ordering, and arrived in large, cardboard boxes. They aren’t quite ‘out of the box’ ready, but set up really is minimal – the polystyrene ‘beans’ are already in their zippable mesh holding bag, so all you need to do is unfold the coloured outer case and pop the inner beanbag inside. The whole process takes no time at all, so is really quick and easy. The quality of the Xavier bean bag is excellent – the inner bag is far more robust than other bean bags we have had before, and we also liked how the zip means you remove some of the beans should you want a slightly less firm beanbag. The fabric on the outer case really is fantastic quality too; it feels very thick and I was incredibly impressed with just how well the whole thing is constructed. Three of the edges are triple-stitched, with an Oxford style edging and the product feel very robust; the fourth edge is secured by a very sturdy zip and a full-length of inch-wide, thick Velcro.
The kids are delighted with them and have been using them almost constantly since they arrived. They clearly find them far more comfortable than being the floor, but what does surprise me is that they also seem to favour them over the settee! They are certainly big enough for an adult to comfortably sit on, and are light enough to move around the house when their friends come over and they want extra seating in the bedroom. The fabric that they are made from also makes them ideal for use in the garden in the summer, and I have absolutely no concerns about their robustness and are standing up perfectly well to being lolloped on, flumped on and jumped on!
They make a super and very trendy addition to the house for extra seating when we need it, but they can be stashed away in the under-stairs cupboard when we just want floor space. For fans of practical Christmas gifts, these would make a great choice – perfect for gamers, movie watchers, readers and kids who need some seating in their bedroom for when friends come over. They’re not the cheapest bean bags I’ve ever seen, but they are probably the best quality and are incredibly comfortable.
