I’ve gone through a fair few pairs of wellies in my life, and most of them end up disappointing me. Some feel strong but uncomfortable, some are comfortable but leak, or many just leave me with cold feet – even when I add welly socks! When I saw the Grubs Midline 5.0 Waterproof Ankle-Height Wellington Boots, I thought they looked warm, sturdy, and waterproof, so I’d give them a go! I’ve only worn them for a couple of days, but the English weather hasn’t disappointed me in giving me the conditions to put these to the test! So far, I’m genuinely impressed. They are warm, protective, and waterproof – even when I stood in a big puddle!

The ankle-height design is perfect for me – high enough to not let water splash inside them leaving me with wet socks, but I also have quite large calf’s so not all longer wellies fit me well. They’re much easier to slip on than full-length wellies too, especially when I’m heading out the door quickly for a school run, and they don’t feel restrictive or slow me down. The neoprene upper part has just enough give to make them feel snug without being tight, and they’re warmer than I expected from something that doesn’t come up to the knee.

Comfort-wise, they’re pretty good too, with the only issue being that these are a little big on me, so I’ll go down a size to my normal shoes to get a better fit in the future. For now, with an extra pair of socks (keeping me even warmer!) they fit well enough. The inside sole has a bit of cushioning to it, so you don’t get that flat, slapping feeling you can get with some other boots. So far, I’ve worn them on my hour long round trip of a school run and in the garden for several hours, and my feet didn’t ache afterwards at all. They’re quite heavy, but I notice this more when holding them to wearing them so it’s not an issue for me.

As for waterproofing, they’ve handled everything I’ve thrown at them so far. I’ve walked through wet muddy grass that would normally soak my socks within minutes, but they protected me well. The rubber lower half feels solid and well-made, and the join between the rubber and neoprene seems properly sealed rather than just glued on afterwards. The grip on the soles is amazing too. They provide good support and I’m not worried about slipping on our decking in them. They have a chunky tread that actually does its job. It might be nice to have some other colour choices available, as there are only two at the moment.

Overall, the Grubs Midline 5.0 boots have impressed me, and I think they may end up being the pair I reach for without thinking any time it’s raining and I’ve got to walk to collect my kids. They’re practical, comfortable, and seem completely waterproof. If you want something that sits between a heavy-duty welly and an outdoor shoe, I think these will suit you well.
