I recently took my two children, aged 9 and 12, to Mini Genius Lab in London at 215 Tottenham Court Rd, London W1T 7PS. And it was a big hit with both of them. At their ages, finding something they’ll both enjoy isn’t always easy, so the fact that they were equally enthusiastic about this was definitely a win!

The whole experience was very hands on, which made a huge difference. Rather than just standing around watching science experiments, the children were encouraged to join in and get involved with their own set of experiments. There was plenty of excitement, laughter and jaw dropping moments along the way, and both children were interested in what was coming next.

A huge part of what made the experience so enjoyable was the staff. They were brilliant: really friendly, full of energy and genuinely entertaining. They had a great way of interacting with the children and keeping their attention without making it feel like they were sitting through a science lesson. You could tell they were putting in plenty of effort to make sure everyone was having a good time.

My 9 year old was completely in their element, but I was also impressed by how much my 12 year old enjoyed it. Sometimes activities aimed at children can feel a little young once they start approaching their teenage years, but I didn’t find that to be the case here. They both got stuck in and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Of course, making slime was a particular favourite! Being able to take it home afterwards was a bonus and meant the fun didn’t completely end when we left.

What I liked most as a parent was that the children were actually learning without realising it. They were asking questions, watching reactions unfold in front of them, and getting excited about science, but it never felt overly educational or school like. It was simply good fun.

The experience was well organised too. With a group of excited children and various experiments underway, I imagine things could easily become a little chaotic, but the staff kept everything moving while maintaining the fun atmosphere.

Price wise, children’s tickets are £29, and tickets for those aged 13 and over are £23. A family visit isn’t particularly cheap, but I felt the children got a lot out of the experience and, most importantly, they really enjoyed it.

There was also a stall selling experiment kits to take home, which we thought was a nice touch. The kits were reasonably priced, and they’re a good way to let children continue the excitement and try more experiments at home. Thankfully, it didn’t feel like one of those places where you get funnelled into an expensive gift shop on the way out!

I came away with two happy children who had enjoyed themselves, learnt a few things and had plenty to talk about afterwards. For me, that’s usually the sign of a successful family activity.

Overall, we’d give Mini Genius Lab 4.5/5. The friendly and enthusiastic staff were a real highlight; the activities kept both my 9 and 12 year old entertained, and we loved how interactive everything was. If your child/children enjoy getting stuck in and trying something a little different, it’s definitely one to consider.
Best of all, there is no mess for you to clean up!!!
