With three kids who all have their own mobile phones and tablets, headphones are a necessity unless I want to listen to their rubbish, in my opinion, music and videos that they constantly are listening to or talking to their friends on call.  With the amount of time they spend with headphones on as a parent you do worry about damage to their hearing especially with the high volume they listen to some of the music at so these headphones and the thought process behind them really appealed to me.

After a family member was diagnosed with Noise Induced Hearing Loss from listening to headphones too loudly for too long as a child and then discovering there was nothing on the market tackling this problem Puro was set up to create the world’s best, safest, highest quality headphones.

Puro Sounds Lab BT2200 – Plus are the world’s best volume limited kids headphones.  They have Volume Limiting Technology which limits the volume to 85 decibels, as per the World Health Organization’s recommendation, even on maximum volume to protect children’s hearing.  This makes them different to other children’s headphones on the market and means you can let you child adjust the volume themselves without worrying about how loud they are listening to their music.  This to me as a parent was a real selling point.

The headphones came nicely packaged in a solid box that you can reuse to store the earphones in.  The first thing you notice when opening the box is that the headphones come with a handy solid storage case.  The case is hard so will protect the headphones when not in use which is great for kids.  My kids have a habit of dropping things or generally leaving stuff everywhere, no matter how many times I tell them not to, meaning they often get easily damaged.  Hopefully the case will help with this. The case has a small handle to carry or hang it with and a net pocket inside for all the headphone accessories.  On opening the case I found the headphones themselves, a quick start guide, a smaller set of ear cups, USB C charging cable, audio cable and daisy chain cable.

On picking up the headphones I was pleasantly surprised how light they were and yet at the same time how good quality they looked.  The headband and ear cups were thickly padded and covered with vegan leather which was incredibly soft.  The whole of the headband was covered rather than just a portion of the headband underneath which often happens in a lot of headphones which makes them extremely comfortable to wear.  The size was adjustable by simply pulling / pushing the extension arms up and down.  The mechanism was smooth so easy for kids to adjust themselves yet felt strong and sturdy so wouldn’t easily break.  The headphones adjusted quite a lot and fitted me as an adult on full extension.  The headphones are wireless so no messy cables for children.  There is an audio cable included that can be plugged into the headphones to use them as wired headphones if you wanted or if you ran out of charge.  The charging cable plugs into the bottom of the earpiece and then into a socket using a plug adaptor (not included) or directly into a USB port that a lot of wall sockets have nowadays.  An LED light of the ear piece shows red when charging and changes to blue when fully charged.  Once fully charged there is 20 hours playback time.

There is a second smaller set of ear cups included that may be better for very young children.  To change the ear cups you simply twist the ear cushion to the left to unlock and then twist to the right to lock back into place.

On the ear piece there are raised buttons so they are easy to find by feel when wearing the headphones.  There is a switch to turn on / off the headphones, a Bluetooth button and volume + / volume – button so nothing overly complicated for children to use.  After a quick read of the Quick Start Guide I turned on the headphones and pressed the Bluetooth button to enter pairing mode.  The blue LED light blinks rapidly when in pairing mode.  Make sure the device you want to pair is within 3ft of the headphones and Bluetooth is turned on.  Select BT2200 – Plus from listed discoverable devices and pairing is complete.  The blue LED light will change from rapid blinking to slowly flashing blue and this means they are ready to use.  Setup was so quick and simple it literally took minutes to do.

Once connected I simply chose a video on my phone to watch.  The Bluetooth button on the ear piece starts and pauses audio play by simply pressing it once.  I used the volume + / – button to adjust the volume.  I wasn’t sure what the sound would be like with the volume limiting technology but the sound was excellent.  It was crisp and clear, not tinny or distorted at all as sometimes headphones can be.

There is a built-in mic so you can answer / reject calls whilst wearing the headphones and paired with a mobile phone. A tone will sound to alert an incoming call and use the Bluetooth button to either answer or reject the call.  Short press the button to answer or hold the button until a tone sounds to reject.  On answering calls I could hear the caller clearly and they could hear me clearly too.

Daisy Chain sharing feature allows two headphones to share one device by connecting a second pair of headphones to the first with the daisy chain cable included.  Only the first headphone needs to be powered on and connected to the device.  This only works with headphones with daisy chain sharing capability.

Background noise isolation blocks out 83% of ambient noise when wearing the headphones.  Wireless range of the earphones is up to 30 feet from the Bluetooth source.

At £80 these are at the higher end price bracket for children’s headphones but honestly worth that extra expense.  They are high quality and durable so will last a long time unlike a lot of cheaper kids headphones.  The sound quality is excellent and the volume limiting technology is a unique selling point that will appeal to a lot of parents.  The padded leather ear cups and headband were so comfortable to wear even for extended periods of time.  The earpieces twist so they sit comfortably on kids ears without feeling tight.  The headphones are available in a variety of different colours. From brighter bold colours that may appeal more to younger children, to sleek darker colours that may appeal more to older kids.  My younger two girls both tried the headphones and found them easy to use.  They honestly loved them which is praise indeed as they are incredibly fussy.  Just need to get another pair now to stop the arguing over who is using them!
