As soon as I saw this, I knew it was going to be lots of fun. The picture on the box popped with bright colours and showed all the cute things that would be inside.

The seven-year-old in our family helped me with this, and she could not wait to start.

Inside the box we found:

The Pen Factory
Six pens
Two highlighters
One funnel
One spoon
One pair of tweezers
Five bags of small decorations
Three bags of small beads
Four pom-poms
Six charm toppers
Two stencils
One sheet of stickers
One instruction sheet

The Pen Factory came in three pieces and was very easy to click together. We made the first pen together, with me looking at the step-by-step pictures and the seven-year-old just diving in and working it out herself, which she had no problem doing.

The coloured ends and a stopper come off the clear tube, which is then placed in the Pen Factory. The funnel is placed on the top, then you select the decorations to drop into the tube, followed by a little water (it only needs a small amount of water; we overfilled ours the first time). Once filled, the stopper and the coloured ends are replaced. You then select some beads or pom-poms for the top, finishing it off with one of the charm toppers, which, as well as looking super cute, keeps everything in place. Some of the stickers can also be put onto the outside of the pen, but it’s your choice.

We were very pleased with our first pen and went on to use all our creative skills to make the others, ending up with two highlighter pens and six regular pens, all with different designs but looking fun and colourful together. Some have been created especially to give to school friends. My young assistant had the idea that she could empty the pens out and start again with another design, but we haven’t tried this yet.

Not forgetting the little stencils, we used all the pens with these to make lovely designs in a little note book we had, we also had a few stickers left so used these too.

It was stated on the box that the ink was scented. There was a slight smell, but not anything I recognised.

One thing to watch out for is the stopper. Make sure this is put in securely to keep the water in.

Suitable for children over six and should be used with adult supervision, this is a lovely kit for any child who likes to be creative, a great activity for a rainy day, for two children having a play date, or as a super gift for many occasions.

My only criticism is that the part of the pen that holds the ink is very small, so I don’t think the pens will last very long.

Made by Canal Toys, the 3-in-1 Pen Factory is available from bargainmax.co.uk and other major retailers, priced at £17.99.
