Over the years we’ve acquired several OXO Good Grips items for our kitchen; including a lettuce spinner, salad servers, dressing shakers and a stackable ice cube box. Unlike many of our household gadgets, these haven’t migrated to the back of the cupboard to gather dust. The always distinctive, modern, ergonomic design of the OXO utensils have remained in regular use.
By now we’re all aware that we should be trying to reduce the amount of plastic we use. I must admit, whenever covering food before putting it in the fridge, I instinctively reach for the cling-film (or aluminium foil). Therefore I was intrigued when I was asked to review the OXO Good Grips Reusable Silicone Lid Set.
The package contained three extremely flexible neon-green circular silicone lids. They interlock with each other, making them very easy to store. It was good to see that when they arrived, there was very minimal packaging, just a small cardboard sleeve.
The sizes of the items were 15, 20 and 28 cm (6, 8 and 11 inches) and they effortlessly fitted the bowls that we regularly use.
They were straightforward to fit. Simply place the lid over the top of your bowls, and pull up on the elevated centre. This action creates a slight suction, which keeps the cover in place and forms a light seal. The only bowls I tried the product on were glass, however, OXO state that they are also suitable for metal or ceramic containers.
The lids have a clear section, so you can easily see what food is contained within each bowl without removing them.
The items are dishwasher safe, and they are suitable for the microwave; hence they can be used as a splatter guard while warming food up in the microwave.
I did question how effective the seal was (it doesn’t claim to be a vacuum seal, and certainly not designed for transportation). A good test was making some egg salad, placing it in a bowl with one of the silicone lids in place. I then left it in the fridge overnight. There was no smell in the fridge the following day, so the seal was more than sufficient for our needs.
When in place, the lids sit flat on the bowl so they can be stacked in the fridge – I wondered if they would be strong enough for this. I’m pleased to report that they were (I only stacked two on top of each other, but I’m sure if you’ve got the space in your fridge, all three could be stacked).
In addition to their intended use, I can also see me using these lids as protection for food at home barbecues and garden picnics.
The brand name OXO Good Grips is a sign of high quality, and these items do not disappoint. As with all of their products, the manufacturers offer the OXO Better Guarantee, therefore if you have any problems, they will repair or replace them.
My only minor reservation about this product and the only reason I haven’t awarded the maximum number of stars is the cost. At £27.00 (this being the best price I could find) for three lids, they’re rather expensive if you’re on a limited budget. However, you must remember that this really is a high-quality and environmentally responsible product, which should last a considerable amount of time.
A great product if your budget allows.
