The Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire is named after Lawrence Batley, a local entrepreneur and philanthropist, who founded a nationwide cash and carry chain.

This imposing building was originally built in 1819 as a Methodist chapel then went through many changes of use until in 1989 the Kirklees Theatre Trust was given the go ahead to save the building from further deterioration. Building work for the theatre started in September 1992 and took 4 years to complete.

Last night I found myself at the February Comedy Cellar at the LBT looking forward to an hilarious evening provided by a couple of well-known comedians – Nathan Caton and Joey Page, and three less well-known comedians – Tom Toll, Pamela Mela and Dotty Winters. What I got was an amusing night with just a few outright ‘belly laughs’ and most of those came from Pamela Mela telling us about her attempts “to have her 12-year old daughter taken into care” so she could start to enjoy life again.

The two headliners, Nathan Caton and Joey Page weren’t as funny as I thought they could or should have been but of course comedy is in the ears of the beholder! The rest of the audience seemed to enjoy their performances more than I did so it may very well be that this particular set of performers weren’t my cup of tea, but who knows, the next set next month might be.

For my night out at The Lawrence Batley Theatre for the February Comedy Cellar I would give it 3/5, but even at that, if you’re looking for a relatively cheap night out then you could do worse than to get yourself along there, where the staff are very welcoming and the drinks are comparable with pub prices.

Rating: 3/5

The next Comedy Celler will be on Thursday 20 March 2014 with Charlie Chuck and El Purnell. Tickets cost from £7 to £9. For more information or to book tickets click here.
