I was delighted to attend the opening night of Fat Friends – The Musical last night (5 March 2018) at Milton Keynes Theatre. The theatre was packed with all ages in the audience, many looking of an age that would remember the TV show itself which aired initially in the year 2000. I think everyone would agree the stage show would have a lot to live up to.
Fat Friends tells the story of a group of friends who are well… fat. They attend the slimming club for their regular weigh ins, sharing in each other’s pain to lose weight and get fit. The story revolves around Kelly’s battle to lose enough weight to fit into her dream wedding dress, how many of us ladies share that pain?! Whether you are young or old, the battle is a familiar one for most of us and one we easily identify with. This show is so funny and down to earth, it makes you genuinely laugh out loud lots.
I think my favourite scene was in the first act… be warned if you’re looking for some fit blokes to ogle you have the wrong show, it was like watching my old man dad dance on the stage in shiny spandex shorts, weirdly sexy! I take my hat off to those four blokes. Fantastic. There really wasn’t anything I didn’t love, the cheeky sense of humour, very adult in places but right up my street.
It’s got a bit of everything for everyone, dancing, singing, humour, they are a fabulous cast. Jodie Prenger as Kelly has a great voice, stunned at Natalie Anderson’s talent, she played Lauren and Sam Bailey as Mum Betty was fab to. Neil Hurst is a diamond as Alan. It’s a real down to earth show with a real feel good factor to it. They all danced and sang their hearts out. I thought it was flab-u-lous, but don’t take my word for it, go see it, I’m still smiling, fantastic show.
