Aldi Feed A Family For £70 A Week Review

Reviewed by Lucy Knight
With a week to go before I jetted off to Cyprus to become a Mrs, I was ever so determined to do the best I could to enhance my weight loss and fulfil my goal of becoming a Yummy Mummy. I have always been overweight but have struggled more since having children. I am a yo-yo dieter and find it really hard to stick at one diet. That being said, I feel extremely proud of myself, as I have lost just under 4 stone since having my son 2 years ago, it had been a long and unsteady journey but I finally see myself going in the right direction and have an amazing support network around me now, so I know I can do this.
I do still have a long way to go before I am at my goal weight, but I wanted to get that last few pounds off that I needed (to ensure my wedding dress fastened up) before I flew. So the Aldi feed a family on a budget challenge with £70 vouchers came at the perfect time.
My vouchers arrived promptly for the beginning of the month and I set myself off to my local Aldi in Eccles, where I usually do my weekly shop. The thing I love the most about Aldi is that I am not tempted by the junk food, I walk straight past the biscuits and chocolate, to the amazing selection of fresh fruits and veg (my other half and daughter are usually left drooling over the chocolate). I always feel inspired when going in Aldi, there are so many healthy items to buy and I absolutely love the super 6. I made sure I stocked up on packs of grapes for taking to work with me. I can’t stand it when I hear people saying that it is too expensive to eat healthy, I think to myself ‘well I bet they aren’t shopping at Aldi, if they think that’. I have actually converted quite a few of my mummy friends into Aldi lovers too.
I took a picture of the contents of my trolley, there doesn’t seem to be a great deal as I left some tins in the kitchen by accident.
Day 1
Breakfast: fruit and yogurt, hoops for children
Lunch: tuna Salad
Tea: baked bean lasagne – I found this recipe from a friend, it is a slimming world inspired recipe, which sounds revolting but it is actually really tasty.
Day 2
Breakfast: fruit and yoghurt, crumpets for the children
Lunch: chicken Salad
Tea: Cajun chicken and homemade chips
Day 3
Breakfast: fruit, hoops for children
Lunch: cheese salad
Tea: homemade bacon & cheese burger, this was out of this world – one of the young people I teach saw a picture of this, that I showed them on my phone, and he actually asked what restaurant I got it from as it looked amazing.
Day 4
Breakfast: fruit and Yoghurt, crisp rice for the children
Lunch: tuna sandwich
Tea: hunters chicken – this is a slimming world recipe again, the BBQ sauce is homemade and made from Worchester sauce, balsamic vinegar, onion, sweetener and mustard, blended down and poured over the chicken. It is a great healthy substitute for the real thing.
Day 5
Breakfast: boiled eggs on toast
Lunch: cheese salad
Tea: Aldi slow cooked BBQ Beef – this is really low syns on my diet and it is really worth it. My son enjoyed it so much, he stole some of mine.
Day 6
Breakfast: fruit
Lunch: chicken salad
Tea: Peri Peri chicken with homemade chips and veg
Day 7
Breakfast: scrambled egg on toast
Lunch: cheese Salad
Tea: beef kofta kebabs, spicy rice and salad
I am really lucky that my children will pretty much eat what we eat (unless its curry!), we don’t really get leftovers either, as their dad is like the family dustbin…
I am really enjoying this challenge, in feeding my family for £70 for a week at Aldi. I know that I could not get such good value anywhere else. I also know that I would be tempted to buy more junk food at other supermarkets.
So I managed to feed my family for the week and even have food left over (this got packed up and sent to a neighbour, as we were flying the next morning), I even managed to lose 3lbs during the week, showing that shopping at Aldi is really helping me to stay on track (and I even fitted into my wedding dress!!!) Thanks Aldi…
