Despite it being a Daddy/Daughter tradition each Christmas Eve it’s only been this Christmas that Edith, who’s two and a half, has really discovered the magic that is The Snowman.

We’ve watched the film, read the book and listened to the cd in the car more times than I care to remember so it was great to have the opportunity to see it in another format.

This version the story is told through the beautiful music of Howard Blake and the choreography of Robert North.

As soon as we entered the theatre the magic started. The stage was lit with soft white lights representing snow and Edith was immediately enthralled.

The show starts with James awaking after a night of snow and he’s keen to get outside to play. He makes a splendid, handsome snowman that everyone admires and later they share some adventures.

All of our favourites from the original story were there, the false teeth, the motorbike trip and Father Christmas and there were extra story arcs too including a love story for the snowman and a fierce looking soldier!

The first act ended as James and the Snowman were just about to fly which meant there was great anticipation for the second act and we weren’t disappointed. The flying was amazing and Edith’s face was a picture watching the spectacle.

The whole show was truly magical and such a treat for the little ones. It should be a Christmas staple like The Nutcracker. Edith was completely engaged throughout despite her young age and loved seeing all the characters come to life.

My favourite moments were the motorbike ride and how the Scottish snowman dealt with Jack Frost. Edith tells me she liked it when the Snowman danced with the pineapple, banana and coconut.

The Mayflower is a great venue, the staff are polite and friendly and facilities are great. With a child who is potty training you need to know that there are plenty of well-located toilets – there are. We went twice!

We parked in the nearby Grosvenor Sq car park which is just a short walk away. After 6pm it’s a flat rate of £2 which is good value.
