This is a must have for any crafting children aged 6-11 and a parent who likes to let their children participate in crafts without mess or the need for close parental supervision.
The craft station comes with a studio (station which has a turntable, mat and cutting area) and also doubles up as sand storage with a little split pot to store the treasures, sand, colour, cutters, moulds and 2 in 1 tools. This is made of thick plastic.
What you get is a true aid for creative play. I am not sure if this is due to my children’s ages (10, 10 and 7) or that they were playing together but once they had made models they started creating dolls food, and various other items to play with Barbie’s, Dolls or Action Men with the sand. As you could colour your own sand this let the girls (10-year-old twins) be able to use their imaginations, and actually started mixing colours (learning outcome!) to see what colours they could create.
The instructions are easily understood with clear wording but also step-by-step illustrations for both how to make the moulds/sand but also how to assemble the station. My 7-year-old was able to do this on his own, the first time (and for a child who refuses to read this is definitely illustrates how effective the illustrations were!).
Although the packaging would imply this was aimed at girls, my son enjoyed it just as much. This to me, is what often upsets me about craft supplies/toys; they are aimed at either girls or boys, when in actual fact this product is perfect for both girls and boys, in equal measures. Luckily for us, my son is more than happy to play with any coloured toys as long as it keeps him interested and he can make a mess!
The best part of So Sand was that the sand did not end up everywhere, and if did go on the floor it was really easy to clean up (with no really small grains getting stuck in the wooden floor grooves)! There are sufficient storage containers for both models and sand ready to be played with again, even when the decorations had run out.
Our 10 years olds would not sit down and play with modelling clay now, but by being able to create models and pretend play food items for their babies whilst having the tools and equipment to decorate and use their imagination meant that it kept them engaged for at least an hour (just enough time for me to recuperate with a coffee!). This has been played with continuously so is not just a one-day toy (you can easily reuse the sand for new models) and offers great value for money. It is not often we have creative crafts that both my son and girls will engage in equally, but this ticks the box!
This was a brilliant source for hours of entertainment for both 10-year-old twin girls and 7-year-old boy.
