Sylvanian Families are described as, “a line of collectable, anthropomorphic (“giving human traits, feelings or shapes to non-human things…”) animal figures…” and are produced in Japan by EPOCH. They were developed in 1985 and were launched in the United Kingdom in 1987.

Sylvanian Families have more than 2,250 unique individual animal characters and over a 100 million animal family homes, furniture sets and accessories. The buildings and surroundings for many of their products appear to be in peaceful forest settings.

I have always found the animal characters really adorable with lovely, charming and beautiful homes, furniture and accessories, they always seem to promote quiet completive play, and this little set was no different.

I’m reviewing the Enchanted Fairy Babies set that is one of the newer ranges Sylvanian Families has recently brought onto the market. It consists of three little animal figures, Fennec Fox Baby Yulie, Husky Baby Linnea and Sea Otter Cradled Baby Cary. They all have outfits on, Yulie has a very pretty blue/pink dress with a jewel at the front, Linnea has a fluffy white jump suit with a bow that has a tiny jewel in the middle and Cary has shorts on and her own little clear blue water shaped cradle. They each have a matching hat and three little ‘matching’ friends, all quite small so the warning that the contents are only suitable for children over three years old is well advised.

I love the quote found on the side of the box the fairy babies arrived in:
“Huh? Where are we?” The babies look around, confused about how they ended up in the forest. “Hey! Look at my clothes!” “Linnea has new clothes too!” The babies soon notice that they’re all wearing new, super-cute clothes they had never seen before. At their feet, little friends are toddling around.
What kind of adventures are about to begin?

I read this to my granddaughters before we opened our Enchanted Babies, and it really captured their imagination. They chatted, very animatedly, about why the babies were there, where their parents were and what they were going to do next! Their play was very quiet, and they were all softly spoken when they chatted to the babies which was lovely to watch. We have recently had an addition to our family, a cousin to them all, so they kept referring to her, which again was lovely. They used their imagination, good verbal skills and were empathetic to each other’s baby. One of my grandchildren has a Sylvanian Family home, although she said she hasn’t used it for a long time (she is nine) however when she brought it out the play got even more involved with her taking the lead.

I think this little set would make a really good starting point if your child has not got any Sylvanian Family characters yet and a good addition to the child who already has some of the Sylvanian Characters. It would make a brilliant stocking filler for Christmas or birthday present. As I can’t just give it to one of my grandchildren, I will pop it into my ‘prize lucky dip’ that we have for our Christmas games, another good use for this lovely little set.
