Last night I enjoyed a fun and entertaining performance of ‘Save The Last Dance For Me’ at the Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent. Anyone who enjoys 60’s music, comedy and dancing should definitely go and see this feel-good show.

The theatre is in the Hanley area of the city and has plenty of parking nearby. We were welcomed into the Piano Bar before the show, which is a beautiful room to relax with a drink and chat to friends. It was possible to pre-order drinks for the interval and there were also snacks available in the main foyer.

The story revolves around sister’s Jennifer and Marie who are staying in a caravan in Lowestoft for their first holiday without their parents. When they meet American airmen Milton and Curtis (Anthony Costa from the boyband Blue), the girls are quite literally swept off their feet. However, the cultural differences and racial tension experienced by black American Curtis means that the relationship between him and youngest sister Marie faces many challenges.

The serious message is intertwined with lots of comedy, particularly from naïve older sister Jennifer played by Lola Saunders (X-factor finalist 2014) who also demonstrated a powerful singing voice. My favourite character was Curtis’ boss Rufus, played by Sackie Osakonor – a perfect mix of air force uniform, melodic voice and smooth moves!

Even before the performance began the audience were encouraged to sing along. This was easy to do with familiar songs such as ‘Sweets for my sweet’ and ‘Please Mr Postman’ used to tell the story. Many scenes involve the cast as a live band which helps with the upbeat energy of the performances. By the time the finale came most of the audience were up dancing, singing and clapping along – the show put a smile on everyone’s face.

I would certainly recommend a night out to see this show packed full of rock’n’roll classics which deals sympathetically with the ups and downs of young love. The energy and enthusiasm of the whole cast is contagious and the witty one liners help to earn the show a 5 out of5 rating.

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
