As a mother who has recently been weaning her baby, but like many spent a lot of time cooking from scratch to ensure the quality of the food my baby was eating, I was keen to try this new fruit and veg blend smoothie pouch from Piccolo. The brand itself is one of the main competitors in most supermarkets and already offers a wide range of over 40 different baby food products from milks to baby food pouches. This product named the ‘yellow & go’ however seems a little different, with the key blend of both fruit and veg and designed for on the go eating.

The product (for me this was 8 pouches) arrived in a simple but effectively branded cardboard box with green and white detailing. Inside the cardboard ‘lid’ states key points about the brand for instance that the products are ‘nutritionist approved’ and ‘no nonsense’ meaning they contain what children need and nothing they don’t (no added sugar, salt or palm oil). A major plus for me and many other parents I am sure. It was immediately clear that the brand on a sustainability mission with the box stating it is 100% recyclable and how the brand is carbon neutral whilst ‘paving the way’ for greener baby packaging. Several included leaflets detail this further. The pouch is stated to be the first baby pouch in the UK to be fully recyclable. A certainly impressive feature and a major advantage over most other brands allowing you to consider buying more convenience baby foods without having a negative impact on the environment. However they are not accepted by our curb side council recycling collections. Instead instructions are apparently gained by scanning a QR code. For some reason this link did not lead me to this on the several times we tried and merely brought up the website section explaining how the pouches are now recyclable. After a bit more research it appears that the pouches can be posted back to Piccolo with a special postage pack. I did wonder how many parents would save up the used pouches and then order one of these bags. Perhaps this bag could be included within deliveries to make it easier and more likely for busy parents to actually keep and recycle the pouch.

The pouches themselves are a smooth blend of banana, coconut milk, butternut squash, sweet potato, mango, rice flour and lemon juice (in order of amounts with the highest first). All ingredients are organic and unsurprisingly given its ingredients the pouches are vegetarian and dairy, gluten and palm oil free. The bright and colourful packaging is modern and eye catching and I feel the whole brand itself appears attractive, even just on the initial visual glance, to parents browsing the shelves for baby foods. The smoothie itself was a hit with my child and I can see why- the blend of sweet fruits and veg creates a creamy and sweet tasting pouch. As a mother it felt good to know that my child was enjoying this whilst knowing it actually included some vegetables. Having tasted it myself I can verify that the taste is good and as you may expect a fruit smoothie to taste so it could even be enjoyed by the whole family.

The branding continues across a well-designed website and social media pages including Facebook, twitter and Instagram. Here you can learn more about the background of the company and its family story which adds to its appeal. Furthermore Piccolo advertises that it donates 10% of its profits to charities which support local families. This nutritionally focused, eco friendly and family centred business has certainly captured my attention and I would be more likely to consider buying their ready made baby foods knowing all this.

I also discovered the website includes a section on recipes, from across weaning stages, to during pregnancy and breastfeeding so is worth a visit for some new ideas.

Available on from many supermarkets or via their own website www.mylittlepiccolo.com. Here you can make up your own selection box from across their ranges with delivery to your door.

I would give this product a rating of 4 out of 5.
