Oggs Luxury Handmade Mince Pies Review
Reviewed by Louise Higgs
I was super excited to receive the Oggs Luxury Handmade Mince Pies to try. Firstly, the packaging is really lovely and (of course) Christmassy! You can clearly see the mince pies through the clear film and the cardboard is decorated with holly leaves and berries. I am an advocate for eco-friendly living, and I was extremely happy to read (on the back of the box) that the box is made from a sustainably sources cardboard, that is widely recyclable. The tray is made from 100% recycled plastic, which again is widely recyclable. The film is fully compostable and biodegradable. This is amazing, because you do not have any guilt over single-use plastics going straight to landfill once the mince pies have been scoffed.
The mince pies are 100% vegan, filled with spiced mincemeat and laced with brandy, topped with a very cute pasty star and dusted in sugar. They are extremely tasty! Sometimes vegan alternatives can lack taste, but these mince pies encompass all the flavour that you would expect from a ‘conventional’ mince pie. The pasty tastes really creamy and it is great to know that no animals or animal by-products were used in the making of the mince pie. The mincemeat has the perfect combination of fruits and spices, with a bit of brandy too- which gives such a lovely flavour.
The box contains 4 ‘melt in the mouth moments’ – I feel that these mince pies would make an excellent Christmas present for vegans and non-vegans alike! They would look super cute in a festive hamper, or you could simply take them around for your annual Christmas get-to-togethers and enjoy with a cup of tea (or something slightly stronger). I have already purchased some Oggs mince pies for my family – my 2-year-old daughter really enjoys them as a special treat! My brother has a severe dairy and egg allergy, so I know that I will definitely be purchasing some for when he comes to visit over Christmas time.
I took them to my in-laws, and I know my father-in-law is certainly no-vegan, so I did not tell him that the mince pies were vegan, as I wanted to gauge a fair reaction to the mince pies. He absolutely loved them and said he wanted to go and buy some. When I told him that they were actually vegan, he was very surprised and impressed that a vegan alternative was so good!
I also noted that Oggs only use sustainable palm oil in the mince pies, which again is amazing, as we all know how bad unsustainable palm oil is for our rainforests. Oggs, as a company, seems really environmentally friendly and are striving to ‘positively change the future of the planet’ – a great company to spend your money with. I am looking forward to trying more Oggs products that I have seen on their website.
I would definitely recommend Oggs Luxury Handmade Mince Pies for the festive period, although they taste so good, you could quite easily eat them all year round!
