I love listening to music, who doesn’t? No matter what genre you like listening to, there is a radio station or streaming device that will play your favourite music. I like listening to the radio in the morning while working, and sometimes when I’m going to sleep, other people prefer listening to their favourite station or album in the car, or even while cooking dinner. We all like listening to something, whether that is music, sport, news or even talk radio at different times, for different reasons. One place I never listen to music or radio is while I’m in the bath or shower. Why? Because I don’t want to take my phone into the shower with me and for the most part, I don’t take that long in the shower. But then I was sent a small portable Bluetooth speaker that changed that. JAM sent me their Hang Up speaker and you can take that into the shower with you!
The JAM Hang Up is a portable Bluetooth speaker with a built-in battery (no need to hunt around for AA batteries). It is rated IP67, which means that it is waterproof for up to 30 minutes (submersed up to 1 metre), dustproof and small enough to take anywhere with you (measures approx. 9cm(H) x 9cm(W) x 4cm(D)). The 2.5w speaker is loud and clear enough for picnics, social listening and even in the shower.
The speaker has no obvious on/off button, just big X and O buttons and the power button is located between these two buttons (just press and hold for 4 seconds to power the speaker on and off).
Out of the box it may need to be charged. There is no charging plug but it can be used with any USB plug you have around the house (from your phone etc.) or plugged into a laptop. It does come with its own charging cable which is integrated around the side of the speaker. Once plugged in the LED will be red, when the LED turns off it is fully charged (takes approx. 2 hours). Fully charged, it will give up to 9 hours of playback.
Pairing is simple, turn on the speaker and the LED will flash blue/red, which is the pairing mode. Enable Bluetooth on your phone and select Hang Up. When the LED blinks blue it is fully paired. It you don’t want to use Bluetooth you can use an AU cable between the speaker and your phone.
Playback is simple, you can use functions on your phone to turn volume up and down or skip tracks or you can use the X and O buttons – If you press and hold the “X” button for 3 seconds you should skip back a track, press and hold the “O” button for 3 seconds you should skip forward to the next track. As long as the speaker is connected and playing something the speaker will stay on, if there is no activity for 2 minutes the speaker will power off to save battery power.
Nothing special so far, just another Bluetooth speaker. But on the base of the speaker is a rubber flap and under this is an adhesive pad. This allows you to stick the speaker to any surface (you twist to remove the speaker from the surface). What’s so good about this? Well, for me, I used this to stick the speaker to the tiles in the bathroom while I was in the shower. As I don’t take my phone into the bathroom, I can use Bluetooth to connect to the speaker and leave the phone in the bedroom (has a range of up to 30 metres/100ft) and take the speaker into the bathroom while having a shower and shave. As it waterproof, with an IP rating of 67, it is perfect for the bathroom. It is waterproof for 30 minutes if submersed in 1 metre of water so the steam in the bathroom is no issue and I’ve had no issues with it. It is loud enough to hear over the running water of the shower.
Overall, this is a good little speaker. The sound is adequate, clear but can sound a bit tinny, and loud enough to hear (as long as you don’t expect to be using it to run a disco). It is very easy to use, light enough (approx. 150g) to carry around and the waterproof ability is fantastic. It can even be used as a speakerphone should you want to take calls while connected to it. I have loved using this speaker while in the shower and not having to worry about water damage.
This would make an excellent stocking filler or gift this Christmas for the music lover in your life.
