A small cardboard box arrived and safely packed inside with crunched brown paper around them to protect them was the Starter Set for Bird Lovers. This comprises of a ceramic bird feeder called “Hello Lisa” produced by Singing Friend and designed in Europe. This came in its own cardboard box. The grey ceramic feeder is circular with a hollow centre and an opening at the front. A modern but sensible design. There are two holes at the top of the feeder and the metal holder which is also found with the bird feeder fits into these holes so the bird feeder can easily be hung on a conventional bird feeder or even on a branch of a tree (You need to assembly the feeder as it is on the branch if you cannot directly place the feeder on a branch) as shown on the picture on the front of the box.

There were no additional instructions with this feeder other than photographs on the box, but they are easy to understand. The front picture on the box shows the feeder hanging from a branch with seeds inside it so you know what to do. On the side of the box are three pictures of birds which will feed at this bird feeder and using the book which came with the kit, the birds that are pictured are Sparrow, Great Tit and Blue Tit. Below these pictures of the birds are pictures of the type of feed you can place in the ceramic feeder, and these are mixed seeds, sunflower seeds, peanuts and fat balls. With this starter set is a brown paper bag of mixed seed which are made by “a little bird company”. It clearly states what the seeds can be placed in (seed feeders, bird tables, ground feeders and trays). On the front of the bag, it also states the composition of the supplementary food for wild birds and this is sunflower hearts, peanut granules, mealworm suet pellets and hempseed. The allergens are printed out in bold so you cannot miss seeing these which is an excellent idea. The company is based in Herefordshire and the batch number and manufacturing date should be on the reverse of the bag.

I like the fact the bag can be opened and closed easily using a snap fastener, so you do not lose the feed if the bag accidently falls over. My feeder is now hanging from a branch of a tree in the garden and so far, I have not seen any birds visiting it but it is early days and I cannot wait to see what birds comes to it to feed. It looks very pretty blending in with the tree. If you like this feeder, on the back of the box the feeder came in, there are two other bird items you can buy from www.singingfriend.com a multi feeder and I think a nest box. These do not seem to be available from a little bird company which has a squirrel proof feeder, eco bird feeder made from recycled plastic (which is a very good way to reuse plastic and reasonably priced), nest boxes and a hanging bird table which I just love and now that I have this beautiful ceramic bird feeder if anyone wants to give me a gift of the Bempton Hanging bird table please do, as it is very attractive and cleverly made by the looks of it from the picture.

I have digressed as I have not mentioned the other product in my starter set which is the RSPB Pocket Birds of Britain and Europe, which as the name tells you is pocket size. This is produced by Dorling Kingsley so as you would expect very well displayed with lots of facts and photographs and pictures which makes identifying birds very easy. This is the 4th Edition which was revised and updated in 2017 and comes with a web address and password so you can listen to 60 birds’ songs. On the webpage, there is a list of birds whose song you can listen to together with the page number where you can find them in the book. The audio recordings are very clear, but I was a little disappointed to see that the common birds such as the ones designed to use my ceramic feeder were not listed as it would have been nice to know their songs. This is a lovely gift which is ideal for someone who has just moved to their own home or as a birthday gift and is suitable for any occasion to encourage more people to encourage small birds into their garden and obtain pleasure from them.
