My 11 year old daughter has always loved “making things” and has enjoyed similar kits in the past, so we were looking forward to receiving the Lip Balm Lab. When it arrived, I was surprised as the box was smaller than I expected but it looked bright and eye catching. We unpacked the box to find lots of scientific looking equipment including gloves to protect your skin. The kit is suitable for children from 8 upwards.
My daughter was keen to get started and her little brother also wanted to join in, which shows that the kit could suit both boys and girls. The instructions were in colour, which was a nice touch and helped make them easy to follow. They tell you clearly when to wear the plastic gloves and also which parts would need oven gloves (only necessary if you heat water in the microwave to melt the wax).
My children happily followed the detailed instructions – decanting ingredients into beakers, mixing, stirring, heating the wax gently, pouring, flavouring, colouring and finally wearing the finished product. The instructions sensibly advise patch testing before use, worth remembering, particularly for people with sensitive skin. They didn’t need any help from me, which shows how good the instructions were.
Both children were absorbed in the lip balm making for over an hour, which is longer than many similar kits. The instructions also gave ideas for making custom balms to your own recipe. My daughter enjoyed being creative and making up her own formula.
The kit could perhaps have done with some more little pots to contain the finished balms, as otherwise they have to be kept in an open plastic tray, which isn’t ideal. There also could have done with being a larger jar of the ‘base’ as this ran out quite quickly, where we still had plenty of other ingredients left. These additions would have helped make the set better value for money. On the whole though, this was a good kit, appealing to both creative and scientific minded children.
