My five year old nephew and eight year old niece were so excited to play with this toy and they were not let down, neither was my 33 year old husband! It is a great toy that isn’t a video game or tv and gave my nephew and niece an opportunity to sit quietly for over an hour exploring how the magnets worked and using their imagination constructing different shapes and buildings. It is also a toy that I know they will go back to time and time again to create new structures and play with it in new and different ways.
The Geomag toy arrived to much excitement, the box is bright with photos of what is inside and ideas of how to play with the magnets, all the possibilities available.
The box contains twelve metal balls, twelve powerful magnetic rods and eleven coloured plastic panels meaning ‘limitless constructions’. The text on the box makes you aware that plastic pieces are made from recycled plastic and the packaging is 61% recycled which is great for the those of conscious of the environment. The age range suggested is 5-99 years which is great, and will encourage multigenerational play within the family. The Geomag’s have also been included in the ‘Good Toy Guide’. I wouldn’t recommend the toy for children younger than five years due to the rods and small metal spheres being a choking hazard.
Inside the box there is a compact, plastic storage box that perfectly holds the magnetic rods and metal balls. The recycled plastic panels are held in a bag to keep them together. It also includes instructions on ways to play.
The instructions are easy to use, with clear diagrams of examples of play. The first part show ideas of different ways to explore and play with the balls and magnetic rods. Giving children opportunities to discover what magnets do and how they work with the positive and negative ends.
The instructions then develop the play opportunities to include the coloured panels that click in between the spaces created by the rods and spheres to create 3D structures and this is where the toy has endless possibilities and hours of fun.
The toy is very educational and encourages and range of learning, it’s great for children’s spatial awareness, hand-eye co-ordination and fine motor skills. They panels are a variety of shapes including eight triangles, two squares and five pentagons. The coloured panels and rods are bright (our pack included green, red, yellow and orange) to help children learn and encourage their creativity and imagination as to what they can construct. It also begins an early love for science, puzzles and construction.
The toy can be used to encourage independent play or across generations in pairs or small groups. The set is small enough to travel to take away on holidays or trips.
I would recommend this toy for religious holiday gifts, birthdays and it would make a wonderful present for girls or boys; young or old.
Rating: I would rate this toy 4/5 stars ****
