From the moment we arrived at Blenheim Palace, it felt like everything was perfectly in place for a wonderful day out. All the Blenheim staff were warm, welcoming and helpful during our visit.

We didn’t have little ones with us for our day out but it was striking that there really is something for all generations to enjoy, including Adventure Play at Blenheim Palace – perfect for mini explorers! Families can enjoy outdoor fun with a Palace and Play Pass, which gives unlimited access to Adventure Play, as well as the Palace, Park and Gardens.

Blenheim Palace sits at the edge of the historic village of Woodstock, centrally located and just a twenty-minute journey from Oxford. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and unique in being the only palace in the UK that isn’t owned by royalty. For generations it has been the seat of the Dukes of Marlborough and has been home to the Churchill family, famously, Winston Churchill was born here.

Gardens and Parkland

As a family, we love walking and with the weather looking fine, we decided on arrival to walk the park perimeter, followed by the shorter formal garden walks – there really is something for everyone. We were given a map on arrival which was most useful as it gave clear information about distances, terrain and accessibility. The park perimeter was a lovely way to enjoy the wider, working estate, with fabulous views and landscape. It was impressive that even though the circular walk was a lengthy 4.6 miles, it was very well maintained and accessible for wheelchair and buggy users.

As we arrived back at the Great Court of the Palace, we had a little rest break by the elegant Water Terraces, accompanied by what must be the friendliest and mood-lifting ducks in the country! The Queen Pool, created by Capability Brown and the iconic Grand Bridge then beckoned, and we had to concur with Lord Randolph Churchill who described it as ‘the finest view in England’. We then enjoyed the contrast with the formal symmetry and structured planting of the Formal Gardens. It all made for hours of enjoyment.

What Blenheim Palace does remarkably well is to cater for all ages and in terms of accessibility, it is second to none. It was evident throughout our visit that Blenheim Palace strives to ensure that visitors with disabilities can enjoy a wonderful day out as much as possible. I was very quick to recommend it to a close family member who struggles with mobility and can find it hard to know where to go for a good day out.

Rooftop View Experience

The Rooftop View Experience is currently open for a limited time until 19th April 2026 and we were lucky to have the opportunity to step onto the Platform and take in the spectacular views across the magnificent estate – highly recommended for an unforgettable experience!

The Churchill Experience

There is so much to enjoy at Blenheim and the permanent Churchill Experience exhibition is included for free with a Palace, Park & Gardens ticket or valid Annual Pass. It tells the extraordinary life story of Sir Winston Churchill, who was born at Blenheim on 30th November, 1874, through historic artefacts and remarkable personal items. The exhibition portrays the strong sense of connection between Churchill and Blenheim and we found it to be particularly interesting. I have a feeling that you could visit the Churchill Experience many times and each time notice something new.

The Palace – exploring 300 years of history

Did we save the best till last? We planned our day around the weather but in doing so, came to realise that Blenheim has so much more to offer than just the Palace. Even with a lengthy visit, we still didn’t feel that we had seen it all!

Blenheim Palace actually has more rooms than Buckingham Palace and each one is absolutely stunning and like stepping back in time. Blenheim operates a booking system, so it never feels crowded and there is the opportunity to wander, backtrack and take as much time as you wish. I would also recommend taking some headphones as you can then download an app and enjoy an audio tour which elevates the experience – such is the attention to detail that makes Blenheim so special. It was fascinating to find out about the relationships of the key people who influenced the building of the Palace and the history of the Palace through the years.

The Chapel

We rounded off our varied day with a quiet moment in the magnificent Baroque chapel, which was well worth a visit.
