and Daughter Imogen age 7½

The day arrived and the scooter was delivered! I hadn’t told Imogen that we were getting one – I wanted to see her face when we opened it… She pulled open the packaging and her first words when she saw the picture on the box was “Cool, I love these!” Not that she had ever been on one, but apparently her friend Louis has one, and “it’s cool” – Praise indeed from a seven-year-old!

The box it came in was pretty big but not too heavy for me to carry. We opened it up and it all looked quite straight forward. All we needed to do was attach the “Steering Tube” and the handlebars. The instructions were quite straightforward with a numbered diagram for all the parts and 5 steps to put it together. There was about 5 seconds where I was unsure which way the steering tube should go (it has a bend in it and I wasn’t sure if it bends forward or backwards) but I looked at the picture on the box and worked out that the sticker would be on the front. The steering tube slotted in and the handlebars have two screws to attach them operated by the Allen key provided. All in all it took about 3 minutes.

Now this is no normal scooter, if you’re used to the 2 wheel stunt scooter or the toddler 3 wheelers, this looks a bit strange; it has two foot plates or “Action Decks” which you push in a variety of ways to make the scooter move. It also has 2 bicycle brakes on the handlebars, a great relief when you have a child who scoots off at a million miles an hour on her regular scooter.

For our first go, we decided to just go out the front of the house rather than on the public highway – safer for all concerned! Imogen got on and kind of wiggled her bum rather than pushed her feet… it didn’t go very far… There was enough room for both of us to stand on it and it showed her one of the ways to manoeuvre it – the scissor motion; pushing both feet out and both feet back in again. I jumped off and she could straightaway do it by herself. The front is on a bit of a slope so it was easier for her. After 3 or 4 goes she was getting better and more confident and in control. Then it was my turn! I jumped on and did the same motion but then I naturally started kind of skating (pushing one foot then the other) – the feeling brought me back to 80s roller discos!! It was seriously good fun, I was quickly able to learn and turn corners and as you can steer with the handlebars and push with your feet on the Action Decks you can turn really tight corners!! It got to the point that Imogen had to ask if she could have it back!

VtrikerEliteAllOn day two we went to the park. Imogen was able to use the scissor motion with much more control, but needed the surface to a have a little slope to get any speed and doesn’t have the power to go uphill, even slightly. In the afternoon she went on her bike, her little sister went on her 3 wheel toddler scooter and I went on the Vtricker Elite for a ride around the village. Usually I am running, chasing the girls down the street trying to keep up! This time I was able to keep up and it was great fun!

All in all went had a thoroughly entertaining couple of days on the Vtricker Elite (particularly mummy!) It is sturdy, felt safe and well made. It is big, which made it great for mummy (and even 6ft 4” Daddy) to ride. However, I wouldn’t recommend this for children younger than Imogen, who is 7½, or those who are small for their age as the handlebars are quite high and Imogen complained that her hands were a little small to grab the brakes effectively. I might add that it is only recommended for age 7+. It is so different to a regular scooter that feels as though we’ll need some serious practice to be any good at it. We’ve only had it for a few days and have managed to master the basics, give us another couple of weeks and we’ll be slaloming and skating for miles!
