Now, here’s what lovely Naomi Millar-Brady of The Virtual Naomi and Menoaid had to say…
How and when did your business start?
The Virtual Naomi was born in January 2022, inspired by my love of solving problems and my refusal to work within the constraints of a “traditional” job. As someone with ADHD and autism, I’ve always seen the world a bit differently, so why not build a business that celebrates that? MenoAid came along later in early 2024 as my “lightbulb moment” after being diagnosed with perimenopause at just 33. I thought, Why is it so hard to find decent support for women going through this? So, I created the UK’s first menopause subscription box to fill the gap. Two businesses, one goal: making life easier for others (and for myself, if we’re being honest).
What have been your biggest challenges in business?
Where do I start? Running two businesses while neurodivergent is like herding very creative, slightly chaotic squirrels who happen to be on crack. The biggest challenge is balancing my passion with staying organised and making sure I continually provide the best service to my wonderful clients. Oh, and people assuming “virtual assistant” means “I just do Admin” Spoiler: It’s so much more than that. For MenoAid, the first box will launch in January 2025. Breaking into a market where it is still treated like such a taboo has been nerve-racking; seeing so many women talk about their struggles to find support has meant I’ve put a lot of pressure on myself to try and make sure I get everything right. But hey, nothing worth having comes easy.
What tips would you give to anyone thinking about starting their own business?
1. Find your thing—the quirky little niche only you can fill, the thing that sets you on fire and makes you feel real passion.
2. Ask for help—Seriously, don’t wait until you’re knee-deep in spreadsheets and tears. A good VA is worth their weight in gold (so my clients tell me, ha-ha).
3. Brace for failure – It happens, but it’s the best teacher (though often expensive).
4. Celebrate wins, big or small – Surviving Monday? Win. Landing a big client? Bigger win.
5. Most importantly, be yourself – People buy into you just as much as your product or service, and every successful businessperson starts somewhere.
What is the best thing about being in Maddy Alexander-Grout’s Invisible to Influential membership?
The community, hands down. It’s like finding your people—smart, supportive, slightly bonkers (in the best way). The advice is practical, the networking is priceless, and Maddy herself is a force of nature. It’s also a great reminder that you can build a business and a brand without losing your personality. Plus, who doesn’t love a good Zoom chat where you actually want to unmute yourself?
Have there been any recent wins that you would like to tell us about?
Absolutely! MenoAid™ is officially trademarked. It’s like putting a little crown on my brainchild. On the VA side, The Virtual Naomi is rebranding in the new year to reflect our growing team, and it’s all systems go! Also, I managed to eat lunch before 2 pm yesterday—big personal win.
Do you have anything exciting coming up that you would like to tell us about?
MenoAid is gearing up for its official launch, complete with our exclusive Founder’s Circle membership for early sign-ups. It’s a mix of VIP status and friendship bracelets (metaphorically, anyway). On the VA front, my team and I are diving into some exciting neurodivergent-friendly tools and systems for clients. Let’s just say 2025 is looking colourful and a bit magical.
Which activities do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?
I wish I could say something aspirational like yoga or rock climbing, but honestly, I’m happiest reading, cuddling my cat, or binge-watching serial killer documentaries like the oddball I am. I also love supporting my son with his competitive swimming and helping him navigate the world as an AuDHD 11 year old, his mind is a very interesting place.
