Always on the look out for baby items, especially those designed to make life as a mummy easier, I was keen to try this new travel accessory.
The parcel arrived in a cardboard box, nicely presented upon opening with the blanket wrapped in monochrome tissue paper (I was pleased to note on an environmental front that there was no plastic or any unnecessary packaging at all). A simple yet clear leaflet was enclosed with the basic item details and a 3 step instruction guide (also on the website). Whilst the item is incredibly simple to use and attach to your car seat, as a mum who often has multiple things on her mind, sleep deprived and with a baby in tow I was grateful for these clear instructions. They also provide peace of mind knowing that you are using the item correctly and therefore totally fulfilling the safety standards. Safety appears to be one of the key features of this item, an important factor in most parent choices when buying items for their child. The cocoon baby blanket prides itself on having been ‘crash safety tested’ claiming to ensure that the item in no way compromises the safety of the car seat. The website states that the tests actually showed that the addition of the blanket actually provided ‘added protection to your baby’s head and chest in the event of a crash.’ Further details on the tests they used can be gained via emailing the company.
The item is designed to use as an alternative to a snowsuit or loose blankets to keep your baby warm when in the car seat. The design allows the blanket to almost become part of the car seat, with holes made for the harness sections. 4 easy to use poppers along the front allow the blanket to be fitted together once baby is inside creating a very snug and cosy looking ‘cocoon.’ I liked the detail of large black buttons on the front of the poppers. These added to the stylish design of the item. Made with a black and white wool exterior and lined in a soft fleece, the blanket certainly looks comfortable and warm. The soft fleece comes in five colours; black, white, red, pink or blue. I was lucky enough to choose the colour that I received and was very pleased with the black as I feel it looks the best but is also the most practical. Personally the shades of the other colour options are not to my taste but at least provide alternatives. The ease of the poppers mean that you can loosen to remove the cover layer or open fully to get your baby out. For me one of the main advantages of this item was the lack of the need to constantly tuck in or rearrange blankets. This alone gives the item a place in the market and is unlike any other baby blanket I have come across. Indeed this is how the item originates with a mum finding a need for this herself whilst on maternity leave and having her own mother knit the original cocoon blanket. So whilst purchasing a useful item you are also supporting a working mum trying to make our lives a little easier.
Whilst the clever nature of the design is for car seats, the blanket can also be used in prams or carry cots, so no need to buy additional blankets. Crucially the blanket is machine washable and can be easily removed from the car seat when needed. The blankets dimensions are advertised as follows; length 75cm, width when open 90cm and width when closed 38cm. The website does say that the item is suitable from birth to 6 months. However, it was not clear why, if your baby comfortably fits within the car seat still (and in accordance with safety guidelines) why the upper age limit may actually be extended for many babies.
Royal mail first class or second class postage options can be chosen with the option of gift wrapping also available for an extra £3 allowing you to send directly if buying as a gift (from exploring the companies Instagram page @cocoonbabies, the wrapping looks stylish with beautifully thick paper and completed with a ribbon bow). A note can also be added if required. Digital gift cards also available to purchase as an option to put money towards as a gift or allow your recipient to choose their own colour.
I would give this product a rating of 4 out of 5.
