Club Tropicana at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth Review

11-16 March 2019

We had a great time last night at the opening night of Club Tropicana’s visit to Plymouth.

If the 80s was your era you will know all the songs and have a fab time singing along, as the whole of the theatre did. It’s a real feel good show with music from Culture Club, The Human League, Bananarama, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and many many more. There are big mobiles and even bigger shoulder pads.

The show is written by Michael Gyngell and choreographed by Nick Winston, with a fantastic group of dancers who have all the moves perfect and put so much energy into every routine.

The show starts with young love not running smoothly and a groom Olly (Cellen Chugg Jones) being jilted at the alter By Lorraine (Karina Hind). It sees the bride, her two friends, the groom and his two friends decide they all need a sun filled holiday to get over the heartbreaks and unbeknown to each other set off to the same hotel.

Joe McElderry plays a very camp and funny Garry as he tries, along with Serena (Amelle Berrabah) and Robert (Neil McDermott) the hotel manager, to get the best hotel rating, knowing that the hotel inspector is coming. There are lots of innuendos and laughs and Kate Robbins (Consuela), the hotels maid, steals the show with impressions, costumes, fantastic humour and a great singing voice as well, and there is a happy ending too.

I must say some of the vocals were not the best, but Joe McElderry came into his own during the last part of the show and had everyone up on their feet dancing and singing along and having a great time and his voice was great.

The Theatre Royal as always is a lovely theatre to visit it has a great atmosphere is always clean and has wonderful friendly and helpful staff.

It is easy to get to using all forms of transport being in the centre of Plymouth with plenty of nearby places to grab a bite to eat.

A great night if you want to escape back to the 80s or just sing along and join in, it had everyone on their feet and there were lots of smiling people leaving the theatre, us included.

A fantastic night!
