BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Mini Review

Reviewed by Jo Tebbs

There is such a vast array of baby carrying products currently available in the Baby Sector, so it can often be a confusing, daunting and somewhat difficult decision trying to select the baby carrying product which best serves our needs. Carrying products can range from slings and papoose pouches, to front and back carriers as well as car seats. Many brands sell a wide selection of carrying products, but we are often drawn to designs / features of products which assist us with our personal requirements.

If you’re anything like me, when it comes to the demands that babies bring to our lives, any product that makes our lives even just a little bit easier, is welcomed and a recommendation often goes a very long way. BabyBjorn is a well-known, recognised baby carrier brand that has been recommended to me by a number of friends, as well as some healthcare professionals too.

I was extremely excited when I arrived home from work to find that TNT had delivered my parcel. A delivery slip had been posted through my front door to advise me that the parcel had been left in the safe hands of my next door neighbour.

On collection of the parcel from my neighbour, I found that the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Mini had been carefully and professionally packaged inside a bubble wrapped (padded) Jiffy bag, with the delivery address details sealed and secured in a transparent, plastic film. This protected the goods inside from any weather elements.

The cardboard packaging of the carrier itself measures 28.5cm x 26.5cm x 7cm.

The front shows a picture of a newborn soundly sleeping in the carrier being worn by the mum. The BabyBjorn logo is clearly seen in the top left corner using bold, red writing and the product name, ‘Baby Carrier Mini’ sits beneath it in smaller, black font.

In the bottom right hand corner, it states that the product is safe and has been tested for babies aged 0-1 year and 3.2-11kg (7-25lb) in weight.

The bottom left corner displays a picture of the fabric type and colour for the carrier housed inside.

The BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Mini is available in an array of colours (various shades of grey, pink, black and indigo) and made from the following materials:

  • a soft-touch, flexible jersey
  • a breathable, cool mesh
  • BCI cotton Satin

All the fabrics are not only free from hazardous and allergenic substances (Oeko-Tex Standard 100, Class 1) but are safe to taste and importantly… are machine washable. For myself, this is an essential ‘must have feature’ because without a shadow of doubt, it will get covered in vomit, milk, dribble and snot, to mention just a few things!

Our version of baby carrier is made from the ‘soft touch jersey’ fabric in a light grey colour. The fabric really does feel exceptionally smooth and gentle but yet durable and strong at the same time.

The back of the packaging has 3 pictures with writing demonstrating the following:

  • Baby sits high on your chest (close to your heart and close enough so you can kiss baby’s head)
  • The carrier has an adjustable head support and wide seat area, so it is ergonomically supportive and comfortable for baby. The head support is made of a thicker, foam like material but that is still relatively flexible. This is vitally important in the early days when babies are unable to support the weight of their own head.
  • The carrier can be altered from in-ward facing to out-ward facing for babies over 5 months in age.

The packaging also mentions that BabyBjorn is a Swedish company founded in 1961 and that they collaborate with paediatricians to ensure the right support for baby’s head, back and hips. This gives you confidence, that as a parent, you are protecting your baby’s health and development. A small Swedish flag is also sewn in at the bottom of the carrier promoting its Swedish roots.

The website details: are provided in a couple of places on the packaging should you wish to read further information about the company and its products. They even place a couple of detachable, cardboard discs highlighting the website details on the baby carrier harness when you initially open the product packaging.

Inside the cardboard packaging are the 2 pieces which assemble to make the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Mini: the harness and the carrying pouch. There is also a simple but yet detailed manual (with instructions provided in multiple languages) demonstrating, using both pictures and basic written instructions, as to how the baby carrier can be assembled and worn. This is a very straightforward process and is self-explanatory. They also highlight information in relation to the fabric and washing instructions, as well as providing warnings to ensure safe practice i.e. never lie down or sleep when your child is in the carrier.

As your child grows, the size of the pouch can be adjusted to ensure optimum comfort and ergonomic posture is maintained. A measuring tape which is sewn into the reverse of the baby pouch can be easily altered changing the size of the pouch section. The harness and pouch both have multiple straps which can also be adjusted to ensure a comfortable fit for both baby and the adult. After all, we are all different shapes and sizes. The alterations are again easy to do so both my partner and I can quickly change the strap lengths etc. as we take it in turns to use the baby carrier.

One of the things that I really like about this product design, is that there is no fabric sat between baby’s body and your own when wearing it. Therefore, should you wish, skin against skin contact can be achieved. This is so important for the baby, especially in those very early few weeks and months, to help develop and nurture the emotional bond with baby.

The 3 areas of the carrier which are secured by clicking clasps, create a distinct ‘clicking’ sound when securely fastened and thus, gives further assurance that baby is safely secured. ‘Press release’ buttons are used to undo these clips. There are also additional ‘button and loop’ securing features too.

Another bonus feature of this baby carrier is that you can fully detach the pouch from the harness whilst baby is still sat within it. This is ideal in the event that baby goes to sleep and you want to put your child down. You don’t need to disturb your child by trying to gently pull their limbs out of the various sections and then lift them out of the carrier, instead you merely release the pouch from the harness and can lay them straight down.

I think that this is fantastic baby carrier which I would highly recommend and rate it 5 out of 5.
