Who doesn’t like a good glass of wine with their dinner, or cosied up in front of a roaring fire? We were excited to try this box of wine in order to sample the different variety of grapes and flavours that were on offer, and it certainly did not disappoint. As a couple we would generally prefer a red wine over a white, and our favourite here was the Bin #011 Alicante 2021. With a notable light fruity flavour, it went very well with the chicken and ham pie we had, and it slid down easily with its soft texture. Two other reds were included, the Mitravelas ‘Red on Black’ Agiorgitiko 2021 and the Lagrein Riserva, Castel Firmian Mezzacorona 2019. The Red on Black has an intense, rich flavour, and went very well with chocolate (although I am a huge chocolate fan so enjoy it with most things!). It was also very fruity and had a hint of spice to it. The Lagrein was aged in large oak barrels making it a soft texture, but felt like a deeper, fuller wine and we enjoyed this with a classic dinner of steak and chips.
There were three white wines in the case as well – the Tokaji Dry Furmint, Pajzos 2021, the Nomas Assyrtiko, Karavitakis 2021 and a Bleasdale The Wild Pear Sauvignon-Verdelho 2021. This last one was our favourite as it was different to a ‘regular’ white wine. We like a sauvignon blanc so were excited to try this blend, and found it to be refreshing and would be great to drink sitting outside on a summer day. It was silky to drink and had an apple/pear taste to it. The Tokaji is a dry white wine and had a stronger taste, which personally doesn’t appeal to me as much, but my husband enjoyed it! Having not previously sampled a Greek wine, we were keen to open the Nomas Assyrtiko and were pleased by its great fruity taste and it went very well with our roast chicken.

The case was delivered to our door by a private courier. The box itself was strong, with sturdy inserts to keep the bottles separate from each other inside. Of all the wine that we have had delivered, The Wine Society appear to take the most care with their delivery.
Overall, this was an enjoyable case of wine, with a fascinating variety of bottles on offer. If you have friends or family staying for a few days over Christmas, the selection offers a wonderful and simple way of exploring some new and different wines.
