A chilled glass of Provence rosé immediately reminds me of relaxing holidays and hot sunny afternoons. I am a massive fan of rosé wine, especially those from the classic Provence region, so I was incredibly excited to try a bottle of this beautiful wine from Château La Coste. I enjoy nothing more than a glass of rosé on a summer evening, and thankfully the recent weather has provided the ideal setting to review their rosé, the Lady ‘A’.
First of all I was very impressed with the packaging. A brown cardboard box arrived inscribed with `we love the planet. Please accept this recycled outer package and focus on the beauty inside’. Sure enough, inside this box was a beautiful pink box that had Lady A written on it and closed with a magnetic clasp. The box immediately screams that this is a luxury product and I wasn’t disappointed.
When you open up the box you are greeted by a wine bottle which has a gorgeous butterfly motif on it. This motif was dreamt up by Damien Hurst and depicts a ‘social butterfly’ in honour of Marcus Anderson, a long standing team member at Soho House.
I took the bottle out and the wine inside is a delightful light salmon, pink colour – the beautiful blush shade you expect from a Provence rosé. I sampled the rosé before and after chilling in the fridge in order to fully appreciate the characteristics. I personally prefer the wine chilled but it does actually say on Château La Costes website to serve at 12°C.
This is a classic Provence style rosé – made from cinsault and grenache grapes. A light, crisp dry, rosé with aromas of strawberry and watermelon on the nose, and an almost floral appeal. On the palate there are flavours of citrus, pink grapefruit, peach, and raspberry with a wonderful acidity to balance out the fruit. The finish is long and refreshing, and had me soon reaching for more.
Personally, I would pair this with a summery watermelon and feta salad, tomato gazpacho, or salmon blinis. Something light, fresh, and that has a touch of sweetness and acidity. Or you could definitely just enjoy drinking it on its own on a sunny afternoon!
Château La Coste is an estate in Provence, France who aim to work in complete harmony with nature. They were given the ‘Organic Farming’ label in 2009 and use biodynamic principles to make sure they preserve the soil and environment while also creating a fantastic variety of red, white and rosé wine. They encourage a partnership between art and wine so as well as Damien Hurst doing the artwork for this wine they also have an art centre on their 200 hectare estate.
At £17.99 it probably isn’t a wine you will drink all the time but it will be worth it when you do. I would definitely recommend this gorgeous rosé wine in it’s gift box either as a present or for a special occasion. It looks beautiful and tastes delicious, and I am already looking forward to purchasing another bottle!
