The Euro’s have certainly gripped the country and not least my 8 year old boy. He’d dipped in and out of football over the years, but with the recent excitement of the Euro’s competition he’s well and truly caught the bug now. Like most kids, once he’s gets into something new, he wants all the gear. So when the Goalkeeper gloves arrived in the post from Decathlon, along with a Euro 2020 football, he was beyond excited to give them a try.
I’d used the sizing guide on Decathlon’s website to measure his glove size, something that I thought would be quite hard for some reason but it was very easy. All you need is a pencil, a ruler and a piece of paper, the most challenging thing is getting them to stay still long enough to measure their hand. I measured him as being a size 5 and the gloves were size 4. (editor’s note – this is a review and size 5 were not available so size 4 were sent instead) Despite this I found the size to be quite generous and they fit him really well. I was even able to squeeze my (slightly bigger) hand into them, at a push.
The gloves were a really striking (excuse the pun) fluorescent green colour on the back and the palms feature a durable black latex coating that give them extra grip to enable better catching and throwing of the ball. In addition, the cuffs stretch and can be secured once on, with a thick strong Velcro strap. My son wasted no time in getting out in the garden to test them out. They got a definite thumbs up from him, he said they have helped him to save lots of goals already. To my surprise they have hardly been off in hands since they arrived, as he channelled Jordan Pickford and spent hours outside being a star goalkeeper.
I’m very happy with the quality of them and they even come with a 2 year warranty which definitely fills me with confidence, given how rough boys can be when playing football!
The size 5 Adidas Uniforia Training football looks great and is a replica of the UEFA Euro 2020 ball. Infact, whilst watching the final my boy took great delight in seeing that the teams were actually kicking ‘his’ ball around the pitch. It has such bright eye-catching colours and a sleek design only befitting of the Euro Cup players. It was easy to pump up and is of a high-quality with a seamless finish. This comes with a 2 year shape guarantee which is really reassuring as I have seen other balls lose their quality over time. This ball retails at £24.99, which is probably more than I would pay for a children’s football. However, it is a special ball to mark an exciting sporting competition that many people love to watch and get so much enjoyment from. With that in mind I think it is a lovely way to mark this important football event and so would make a fabulous gift for any football fan. My son tells me its great and is his most favourite football.
Both boast a high quality, have great colourful designs and are a perfect way to encourage children in their love of football, especially on the back of what our honourable and inspirational England team have achieved in the Euro’s.
Rating: Both items get 5/5 from me.
