I had the extremely fortunate opportunity to try the Classic Cuvee by the English vineyard, Hambledon in Hampshire. This Chardonnay is made in a sparkling style, meaning it has lively bubbles, and it contains 12 percent alcohol by volume. It is described as a white, dry wine with a medium body, offering a balanced feel that is neither too light nor too heavy. The blend is made up mostly of Chardonnay, which plays the key role in shaping the wine’s character, and is supported by smaller amounts of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Together, these grape varieties combine to create a well-rounded sparkling wine with structure, freshness, and depth.
This wine presents itself as bright, lively, and refreshing in character, with a notably dry profile and a fine, persistent sparkle that adds lift and elegance. On the nose, it opens with delicate floral aromas that are clean and fresh, supported by crisp green apple notes that suggest freshness and youth. Along with the fruit aromas, there is a soft, bready note that adds character and makes the wine taste more complete.
When you take a sip, the flavours become fuller and more interesting, with clear tastes of ripe golden apples and quince coming through. These fruity flavours give the wine a soft, natural sweetness, but it never tastes sugary because that sweetness is kept nicely in check by the wine’s crisp, dry finish. The fruity flavours are balanced by gentle hints of biscuit and light toast, which make the wine feel smoother and more comforting, adding a bit of warmth and richness without making it feel heavy or overwhelming. Overall, the wine feels light and easy to drink, with a smooth, relaxed feel that makes it simple to enjoy and very pleasant on the palate.
When it comes to food, the wine’s fresh, slightly tangy taste and its light, not-too-rich feel make it easy to enjoy with many different lighter meals. It does not overpower food, so it works well alongside dishes that are simple, fresh, and delicate in flavour. It pairs particularly well with seafood of many kinds, from simple preparations to more delicate flavours, and complements fresh salads and mild, soft cheeses, where it can enhance rather than overpower the food.
I rate this product as 5/5. I would recommend this beverage to people who enjoy fresh, easy-drinking sparkling wines that are not too heavy or overly sweet. It would suit someone who likes a crisp, dry style with balanced flavours and a smooth, approachable feel.
It is an excellent choice for those who enjoy Chardonnay-based wines but are also open to a blend that adds a bit of extra depth and character. It would appeal to casual wine drinkers looking for something refreshing for social occasions, as well as to more experienced wine lovers who appreciate a well-balanced, classic sparkling style.
The deep dark blue of the bottle presented in a canvas carrier bag bearing the Hambledon logo, enhances its sense of uniqueness and makes it particularly well suited as a gift for any special occasion.
It retails at £29.95 and can be purchased from Hambledon Vineyward here.
