Franklin Franklin (Matt Lucas) is a wig wearing, clumsy recluse living in an apartment block. He is a very strange man whose entire wardrobe consists of knee high socks, white underwear and a coat. He loves playing his alphorn and dreams of Switzerland while spying on his 15 year old neighbour, Simone (Juno Temple), through a pair of high powered binoculars. His alphorn playing is a cause of constant aggravation for his neighbours Mr Allspice (James Caan) and Tommy Balls (Johnny Knoxville). His brother Bernard (James Marsden) is crazy and send him nail clippings and death threats in the post.
While late yet again with the rent Franklin accidently kills his landlord Mr Olivetti (Peter Stormare) and dreams up several ways to dispose of the body. His dog tells him to take the landlord to his house and make it look like suicide which goes extremely wrong which ends up with him stabbing him, shooting him and then setting him on fire.
Burt Walnut (Billy Crystal) is the fire investigator who is called in to find out what has happened leads him to Franklin and Franklin’s dreams of Switzerland seems very far away.
Overall, with an all-star cast I was underwhelmed with the story. There were some humorous and witty moments throughout the film that make it worth watching with each character in the “small apartments” having their own quirky character flaw.
Rating: 3/5
