Alfie’s Christmas by Shirley Hughes Review

Alfie’s Christmas is a wonderful addition to the ‘Alfie’ series written by Shirley Hughes – both author and character have been exceptionally popular for many many years and this book is bound to help that tradition continue.
The cover will instantly attract the attention of children, parents and other family members with its beautiful illustrations depicting Alfie and his little sister Annie Rose emptying stockings whilst sitting next to their Christmas tree surrounded by presents – it is sure to warm the hearts of the whole family.
The story begins with Alfie showing his caring side by making cards to send to family and friends (as well as decorations) – what a wonderful example to set for his little sister and younger readers; it’s not always about big expensive presents, very often the most special gift is something (like a card) that someone has taken the time to think about and make.
Following this, we are introduced to the rest of Alfie’s family – including one very special visitor from much further afield – demonstrating that one of the lovely things about Christmas is the effort people go to spend time with loved ones.
Another thing that is so positive about this particular story is the inclusion of all the Christmas activities that Alfie and Annie Rose take part in with various members of their family from making biscuits and shopping for special gifts to decorating the tree and carol singing.
Shirley Hughes has been a firm family favourite for such a long time that it comes as no surprise that ‘Alfie’s Christmas’ is another success – it is a lovely story about family time at Christmas that takes us through Alfie’s adventures in the run up to (and on) this special day. It would be a perfect story to share with young children (and the rest of the family) next to the tree during the holiday season.
I cannot fault this book and would certainly recommend it to others – it definitely deserves 5 out of 5!
