Whittlebury Hall is a beautiful Golf, Hotel and Spa complex in Northamptonshire, not far from the legendary Silverstone race track. It’s easy to find off the A43 and the village is well sign posted. We were visiting to try out The Day Spa Winter Spice Spa Day (£79 per person*) which includes a two-course buffet lunch, full use of The Day Spa Heat and Ice Experiences, full use of the Spa and the Leisure Club facilities and the Aromatic Whittlebury Winter Spice Body Ritual (treatment time: 50 minutes).

On arrival at our Spa day experience, we found parking to be me more than adequate (although we did spot a few golf balls lying around the car park and decided to leave the car a bit further away just in case), the Spa itself was well sign posted. We checked in fine, received our itinerary for the day (midday lunch and 1.30pm treatment) and then after we changed into our robes the lovely ladies on reception took us through the facilities and we were given a full tour.

So, once left to our own devices, we headed for the Heat and Ice facilities, comprising of a larger than life Jacuzzi with various sections you can sit/stand in, be pummelled with water jets or just sit and enjoy the relaxing bubbles and the different steam/sauna rooms, including Ice Cave and Experience Showers. My personal favourite in this room was the Sanarium – a lovely dry heat and not too stifling. Simon (my husband) tried the Ice Cave but he couldn’t convince me to join him. The setting itself is extremely relaxing with beautiful calming mood music being piped through the speakers around the room, the décor was like a Roman Bath, with painted columns and landscapes to set the scene. We certainly did feel pampered and relaxed.

Just before lunch we made our way to the swimming pool and the terrace area where we had a dip, swam a few lengths and then settled down to a bit of reading. At midday we had our buffet lunch which comprised of a lovely selection of cold meats and fish, jacket potatoes, various salads, beef curry, paella and fish. For desert there was a very nice fruit salad and natural yoghurt for those who were feeling the health kick. Overall the lunch was a really lovely selection and catered for all tastes.

Before our treatments we decided to spend a bit of time in the ‘Whisper Room’, a room/area set aside in a quiet area of the Spa/Leisure centre where you can sit or lie down for a rest. There were about 6 beds, all water beds making us feel like we were floating on clouds and about 4 large hanging chairs with so many cushions you could just fall asleep looking at them. So we tore ourselves away from the ‘Whisper Room’ at around 1.30pm and headed off for our treatments.

Wow, Paula and Ferm, our Therapists, were amazing. Both our therapists explained every aspect of the treatment to us before they started, asked how much pressure we would like for our massages, asked if there was anything they would like us to concentrate on and also spared our dignity when we had to change into some paper knickers. They were both very professional, courteous and skilful and the treatment was fantastic. Firstly a Mulled Wine Salt Scrub to exfoliate the skin, followed by a back massage with some beautifully aromatic oils. The settings in the treatment rooms were equally relaxing, dimmed lights, beautiful aromas and soothing music. Finally, we were handed our Mulled Wine vouchers and decided to enjoy these in the main bar (the Silverstone Bar). The bar is in the typical style of a ‘gentlemans club’ with large leather sofas and chairs and the walls are full of photos and paintings of legendary racing drivers from the nearby race track.

Our only negative observations were:
1 – the men’s changing rooms in the Spa only had one shower
2 – the ‘Whisper Room’ wasn’t very quiet with trollies being walked through every few minutes
3 – the Aqua-Aerobics instructor didn’t seem very enthusiastic or involved in the routine.

Other than these negatives, the whole experience was brilliant and highly recommended.  A perfect way to indulge and relax this festival season.

Rating: 4.5/5
