Breakout Manchester Review

Breakout, what’s that? Exactly what I thought when I first heard of it and exactly what my friends asked when I invited them to join me. Breakout Manchester is a game where you have 60 minutes to solve riddles, find clues and ultimately escape from a themed room. I use the word game loosely as it is more a series of intellectual challenges that are by no means easy.
I really didn’t know what to expect so to find out some information I looked on the website which was really informative and answered all the questions I had.
The location is central Manchester so there were multiple ways to get there. I chose to drive and found a parking space easily just on the outskirts of the city centre. It would have been just as easy to get a bus or train though as Breakout is located on Brazennose Street just opposite the town hall. The building was clearly marked on the outside so it was easy to spot, with no fear of missing it.
The time slot we had for our game was 6:30pm. There were time slots to choose from throughout the whole day, with the last one being 9pm.
After going up a flight of stairs and entering a waiting room we were greeted by a guy called Dave who would be overseeing our game. Dave explained about how things worked and gave us a few little hints about keeping an open mind and thinking outside the box.
There are four rooms altogether. The one which my friends and I were entering into was called Sabotage, and the aim was to stop a missile being launched. Each room has its own difficulty rating. The Sabotage room, which is the newest of the four, has a rating of 4.5 out of 5, and a 25% pass rate. This made us determined to be in that 25%!
We entered the first room which was set up as an office and set to task. In total the game took us through 3 rooms, and really got the adrenalin pumping as the clock ticked down.
Dave was watching via cameras and was able to help point us in the right direction and give us small hints if we were really struggling. This kept the momentum flowing and also meant we continued having fun and got the most out of the experience.
The game can be played by 2 to 5 people and we had 5 in our group. This was a good number and I think it would have been a lot harder with just two players as it helps to have a mixture of different skills. I think if there would have been less of us, it would have been better to choose send a room with a lower difficulty level.
I am pleased to say we managed to escape the room with only 5 minutes to spare! It was tense, exciting and so fulfilling when we made it out of the room in time.
I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who wants to try something new with friends, colleagues or family. It pushes you to use your mind, but with the right amount of fun mixed in to make for a thrill filled 60 minutes. I’m already looking to book my next visit, and will be telling everyone I can about it.
It should be a must for anyone who likes a challenge and who enjoys trying something different. I would give this experience 5 out of 5, and will be going again until I’ve completed all of the four rooms!
