The Flying Dog is a recent addition to Leith in Edinburgh, described as an American Diner. Its decor was warm, with hints of American finds.

My partner and I took our two girls, 11 and 7 years, here on Saturday for tea. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table. Vivienne (who we later discovered was the owner) explained the menu to us. The Flying Dog specialises in Hot Dogs but if this is not for you there is also an extensive range of Scandinavian open sandwiches.

You are spoiled for choice with the variety of Hot Dog toppings available. I opted for the Top Dawg! which was truly scrumptious! A gorgeous sub roll from a local bakery, with a hot dog covered in onions, tomatoes, Louisiana hot sauce and picked jalapeno peppers – yum! These are definitely not any old hot dogs but a ‘gourmet hot dog’. My daughter opted for the ‘Lazy Dog’ which was a plain one, and one she said was the best she had ever had, and my partner chose one with cheese and homemade coleslaw. As my youngest is not a fan of hot dogs Vivienne was so accommodating and basically asked what would she like. Savanna chose ham, cucumber and chunky fries, which made for a very happy little girl, and a happy family tea out! Vivienne suggested as we all wanted the chunky chips to get just two portions and she was right the two pots of chips was more than enough for us all. Chunky fries were loved by us all, crispy and fluffy. A side of homemade beetroot coleslaw was a perfect addition to my Top Dawg!

A wide variety of American beers and good choice of wines or fizz as well as soft drinks are also available. We plumped for gorgeous Pinot Grigio as recommended by Vivienne and a cool bottle beer.

Although truly full I could not go without trying the American cheesecake – a pear, apple and caramel one. Wow gorgeous… my eldest daughter wasn’t sure so Vivienne was kind enough to let her try the Mississippi Mud Pie, which I sneaked a taste of – also yummy.

Although only a few diners in, it was early by Edinburgh standards for tea, there was a lovely friendly atmosphere to The Flying Dog. Family friendly and to my daughters delight, well behaved dogs are also welcome. Something we will remember for future… Clean lovely toilets must be mentioned too.

This addition to the Leith area of Edinburgh is a great little place to visit just for coffee, lunch or like us a lovely Saturday night tea. We also noticed that there are themed nights every now and then so check out their Facebook page for updates on this.

We will definitely be back, as every family knows if the kids are happy then it makes for happy parents too! So a thoroughly enjoyable, relaxed family tea.

For the four of us with 2 glasses of wine and 2 beers, puddings and sides it was £52 which we thought was worth every penny. We will definitely be back and would like to give The Flying Dog 4.5 stars.
