We went to see the play You Stupid Darkness! written by Sam Steiner at Plymouth Theatre Royal Drum Theatre last night. We had great seats but as the Drum is quite a small theatre you would have had a perfect view of the stage where ever you sat, and the Drum has a very good atmosphere about it.
The play is set in a rundown office used by Brightline, who are a helpline for people feeling unable to cope with life in what seems like an apocalyptic outside world. The set is quite basic, but this allows for you to be able to focus on the characters, which there are four of them from the Paines Plough Company. Jon who is the least optimistic of the volunteers, played by David Carlyle, Joey the youngest new volunteer, played by Andrew Finnigan, Francis the pregnant team leader, played by Becci Gemmell and Angie who puts her heart and soul into her calls, played by Lydia Larson. The actors draw you in so you get a real feel for the things that are not right in their own lives while they are all trying to help the callers through their problems not to successfully most of the time it would seem.
It is a thought-provoking play that makes you think about compassion friendship and empathy and to see that most people will have life problems too no matter how they look on the outside.
It is always a pleasure to visit the Plymouth Theatre Royal. It is very easy to get to being on Royal Parade which is one of the main city centre streets where all the buses stop there is a taxi rank and plenty of parking available very close to the theatre if you want to drive in. There are plenty of places to eat nearby and the variety will cater to everyone’s taste, the theatre also has a restaurant and a café area with a very good selection of snacks and hot and cold drinks.
I have always found the staff very helpful and polite and the theatre is modern and always neat tidy and clean all in all the perfect place for a lovely evening.
Tickets cost from £11 to £15 (booking fees may apply).
