The new West Lakes Village at Butlin’s Minehead has now officially opened and I was lucky enough to get the chance to take my family for a short break in one of the brand new chalets.

The new chalets have their own dedicated check-in area. This is a simple process and within a few minutes you have your key card and information of the activities on offer for the duration of your stay. We arrived a few hours earlier than the official check-in time of 3pm so were expecting to be turned away and told to enjoy the activities until the chalets were ready but were pleasantly surprised that the staff were happy to give us our key card. The only minor issue we had was when we arrived at our chalet our key card didn’t work but that was because it was before 3pm. This was not a problem as a member of staff passing by allowed us in to our chalet and once 3pm came round, the card was activated.

The chalets are provided on a self-catering basis, however, you can upgrade to one of the dining options if you prefer at a cost of between £18 and £25 per adult per day and prices starting at £4.75 for a child although this varies depending on age and which type of dining plan you choose. Children under the age of 2 eat for free. The dining plans include selected drinks, a buffet breakfast and dinner with a large range of choices including a children’s food station with their own plates and cutlery. With the kitchen in the chalet being so well equipped, you don’t really need to add a dining plan on to your stay unless you don’t want the hassle of cooking whilst on your holiday. The Wi-Fi is free for all chalet guests (you can get a code from chalet reception) but we were too busy using all the facilities that Butlin’s Minehead offers.

The chalets are extremely attractive and are painted in various different pastel colours bringing a fresh new look to Butlin’s Minehead. This appears to be a conscious move in a new direction and an aim at appealing to the luxury-seeking customer and luxury is what they will get at the West Lakes Village. We stayed in the 2 bedroom chalet which can accommodate up to 4 people. The master bedroom has an ensuite which also has a door to the hallway of the chalet which we thought was a great idea. There is also a toilet next door to the twin bedroom which was perfect for my daughter. The bathrooms are finished to a high standard and contain everything you could possibly require as well as a very powerful over-bath shower in the main bathroom. The bedrooms have plenty of wardrobe space and drawers as well as bedside tables and the master bedroom also has a dressing table area which was a nice addition. One problem we always notice when staying away is the lack of plug sockets or they aren’t where you need them to be for the modern world of mobile phones and other devices that need to be charged, however, the chalets have been so well thought out that there are plenty of sockets and they even include one beside every bed. The living space in the 2 bedroom chalet is fantastic! It feels very open, airy and bright due to the large double doors out to the veranda and comprises of an open plan kitchen, dining area and a sitting area with large flat screen TV and DVD player. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you would need if you chose to stay on a self-catering basis including a dishwasher. Butlin’s also provide a starter pack which contains dishwasher tablets and dish cloths which is a lovely touch as it means you don’t need to bring lots of the basics with you. The living area leads out to a gorgeous veranda with table and chairs which, in our case, had a wonderful view overlooking the lake. My 3 year old daughter enjoyed sitting out and spotting the ducks as they went by.

The chalets are kept spotless by the army of cleaning staff who come in each day to replace towels and toilet rolls amongst other things. We came back to lovely clean dishes one day as the housekeeper had put our dishwasher on for us which was yet another thoughtful gesture and so handy as we had forgot to do it before going out that day.

You can tell Butlin’s Minehead have put a lot of effort and consideration into the planning of these chalets, including consulting members of Mumsnet, as they have everything a family could want and provide a great space where all the family can get together with the living space being open plan. Another of the ingenious ideas Butlin’s have used in their chalets is that the radiators never get hot to the touch, in fact, you will probably not even realise they are on as they are always cool so as not to burn the little members of the family. Don’t worry about getting cold in the chalets either as they are incredibly good at keeping the heat in, however, if you do feel cold, there is a heating boost button in the living room which works well.

The chalets are brilliant as you get the benefits of staying in private accommodation alongside all the benefits of staying in a hotel. The chalets are perfect as a base to enjoy all that Butlin’s offers or as stand-alone accommodation if you are looking for a more relaxed break. The location of the chalets being at the edge of the site amongst the newly created village green and lakes allows for a peaceful, quiet escape from the main park.

The chalets are quite pricey, however, this includes all of the unlimited Butlin’s activities and facilities in addition to all of the benefits of staying in such amazing accommodation which more than justifies the price. You don’t even need to leave the site if you don’t want to as there is so much going on especially if you’ve got children with you. We absolutely loved our time at West Lakes Village and would love to return again! I have already been raving about the chalets to my family and hoping we can all get together and return soon.
