Titanic The Musical at the Theatre Royal Plymouth Review

Last night I got to watch Titanic The Musical at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth. If I’m totally honest I wasn’t sure what to expect, I had seen the film so I just assumed it was based on that, and that we would be told the story of Jack and Rose in a musical way, but how wrong was I! Instead you’re told the story of different class people who were on board ship, introducing each one separately and finding out why they wanted to go to America. The third-class immigrants were hoping for a better life, the second class were hoping to achieve greater wealth and the first class were fine dining, enjoying their privilege, the best the ship had to offer while sailing speedily to America. The cast all played their roles well and you could really tell the difference between the classes which seemed to be really important aboard the Titanic.

The musical includes many facts about the ship, which were really interesting, and I learnt a lot from the evening. It was made more special as we were sat next to a lady whose Great Grandfather was working on board, she told us how he survived, and it really made relate more to the true stories in the musical.

The stage set was simple, but the lights and music made you feel you were in different areas of the ship, may it be the Coal Room, on the decks or in the first-class dining room.

I felt it was a very moving musical keeping your attention with you wanting to find out more about each character. I didn’t have a favourite character I enjoyed learning about each one individually.

Although there were not many songs I knew it really didn’t matter and I still really enjoyed the show and I thought it was very cleverly put together.

I couldn’t fault the vocals all the songs were sang really well and clearly.

There was a standing ovation at the end which the cast thoroughly deserved.

Rating: 4.5/5
