The Fairytale Hairdresser and Cinderella Review

Reviewed by Sophie Rix and daughter (almost 4 years)

“The queen of hearts is holding a ball to find the PERFECT girl for her PERFECT prince. But Cinderella doesn’t have an invitation or a dress — what’s a girl to do? Luckily, Kittie Lacey, fabulous hairdresser to the fairytale stars is on hand to give Cinderella a job, find her the PERFECT dress and get her in to the ball.

But with so many other fairytale characters to fight through, including a pair of all-too-familiar sisters, will Cinderella and her PERFECT prince ever find each other?

Filled with gorgeous gowns, glamour, glitter and hairdos to make your dreams come true, this classic story has never looked so good. PERFECT!”

My review:
The book itself is a large, thin, children’s paperback with a brightly coloured, textured and SPARKLY cover. The illustrations are modern and quirky and inside you find good sized, simple, short sentenced text making it easy for your child to understand and follow the story where ability allows. The title emblazoned across the cover in shiny purple, combined with the illustrations and sparkles drew my daughter in straight away. Anything that relates to a “fairy”, “princesses” or “Cinderella” is a hit in our house at the moment and this brilliantly incorporates all three within just the title! The colouring and presentation throughout continues to be fairly quirky and bright and absolutely suited to young children, any children in fact.

I found the initial synopsis fairly straightforward and knew immediately my daughter would enjoy the book. She absolutely loved the sparkly cover that she could touch and feel for herself.

The book/story itself is a very easy read. It is a light hearted story about a hairdresser to traditional fairytale characters – gnomes, Pinocchio, wolves, Little Bo Peep and such like (illustrated rather than actually named) with the addition of incorporating a modern twist on the traditional “Cinderella” character. It is a lot shorter and less involved than I feel the synopsis presents it but as it is a children’s book, I doubt it would be noticed but it may not keep interest for as long as hoped.

Overall my daughter and I enjoyed the book – as previously stated it incorporates her absolute favourites in princesses, Cinderella as well as fantasy and fairytale characters. It ended typically in “happy ever after” format and generally was as expected, cute, colourful, girly and princessy!

I would recommend this book to any little girl to read, you can’t go wrong with this story.

All in all a 5 out of 5. Daughter happy…  so am I! If I was to be super critical, a bit more could be added to bulk out the story but it is aimed at children from a young age, so more than meets their needs and interests in a book. Recommend!
