Last night we were at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow to see the comedy musical The Producers starring Jason Manford, Ross Noble and Cory English. We arrived in plenty of time before the show and were able to park off the street just round the corner from the theatre; there are also 2 large car parks nearby and good public transport links.

As soon as we walked into the theatre we were awed by the décor and the friendliness of the staff. The reception areas look very sleek and modern, but the sitting area and the stage look like they haven’t changed since the theatre was built. The theatre has this family homely atmosphere and definitely lives up to his name Theatre Royal thanks to regal dark red velvet walls and lots of gold. An amazing renovation effort of the oldest theatre in Glasgow!

We did not know what to expect from the show, but from the very first second, we were glued to the stage. The actors were so natural, we even forgot we were watching a musical, not a real life situation!

The show starts with an opening night of a musical version of Hamlet, produced by Max Bialystock. Max has not been at his best for a while and the opening night is a flop. He is struggling to get his ends meet, until he meets a young and naïve bookkeeper Leo, who is dreaming of becoming a producer. Leo comes up with an idea, that it is possible to make more money from a disaster play than from a hit success. Together Max and Leo decide to find the worst play, the worst director and the worst actors. The result is hilarious! Imagine gay Hitler dressed all in sequins!

The opening night to every one’s surprise turns out to be a success! To find out how the show ends I recommend to go and see the whole show! The actors were out of this world! Amazing singing voices, dancing moves, but best of all, the musical is a comedy. We have not laughed so much in ages! For the best part of the musical I wanted to jump on the stage and join the show! The atmosphere reminded me of a carnival in Rio, and after the musical I felt like I’d just been to one!

The show was everything I could wish for in one and even more: a comedy, a great play and stunning performance by the actors! Give it 6 out 5! And recommend it to anyone wishing to have one of the best 3 hours of one’s life!

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
