Well, what a good time to review a football-based game, right in the middle of The World Cup 2026 and having football mad grandchildren and children I knew I would have enough participants to try out PlayMonster 5 Second Rule Mini Game.

The game arrived in a padded envelope, so no package wasted and was a cylindrical container about the size of half a tube of Pringles (Approximately 6”) and was light and very portable. It is promoted as ‘180 questions –8 years plus—2-8 players.
The contents in the tube are:
90 Question Cards with 180 questions (both sides are used with different colours at the bottom of each)
6 Substitute Cards
6 Transfer Cards
1 Spiral Timer
1 Set of Rules
The packaging also gives a comprehensive rundown of what the game entails, “Time is not on your side as those balls twirl down the spiral timer” and a warning Ǿ, in red with a line through a sad baby face and 0-3, ‘Small parts. Choking hazard’.

In the rules, which are easy to follow using ‘Titles’ i.e. Timer Note, Setup, Play, Winning the Game, Special Cards and Object of the Game, “To answer the most questions by giving three correct answers before the balls twist down to the bottom of the timer” which give you all the instructions you need and answers any questions you may have.

My three adult sons (and their Dad) took the game with them on a trip away and used it in the car. My middle son said, “Incredibly easy to follow. However, the answers were pretty much based on whether the rest of the people playing agreed that they were correct, so a good point would be not to take it too seriously and definitely don’t play for money! Also, doubt non-football fans would know many of the answers. The metal balls on the 5 second timer kept getting stuck or were slow, so the timekeeping was a little inaccurate” (as mentioned above). When asked did they think their 8-year-olds would be able to play it they thought they would be able to answer some of the questions, so they were next to have a go.

Fortunately, it was my 8-year-old Grandson’s birthday, so I took the game along and played it with three football mad boys and their mums (non-football fans). The boys loved the timer and the noise it made so we worked out that they could take it in turns to turn it and I would read the questions. After trying the original rules which were if you don’t get your 3 answers in 5 seconds it went to the next player who had to use the original answers and add their own to make up the 3 answers, to them just answering the questions themselves and if they couldn’t get them all their mums could help. This worked well and the boys did enjoy the game, but their knowledge was a little limited (however when prompted by their Dad’s they did ok!) The non-football mums also did quite well, it’s surprising what you pick up when you live in a football mad family!

To sum up I would say this is a handy game to pop in your bag for a ‘keeping the children occupied game’ although you would need either the answers yourself or the ability to find them out as no answers were given. But I would definitely recommend it for football mad adults, maybe a good Father’s Day present? They really enjoyed it both in the car and at the party. It is also relevant at this time due to The World Cup 2026 being played at the moment and as it has an SRP (Suggested Retail Price) of £12.98 I think it is a good value game with lots of ways to play.

PlayMonster have a number of other products in this range and also produce a variety of other products. 5 Second Rule Football Mini game can be purchased from Amazon, Smyths Toys Supermarket, The Works and a number of other retailers.

Rating: 4/5
SRP: £12.98 but I have seen it as low as £6.45
