Our family love to play board games, so when we were given the opportunity to play ‘The Genius Square’ we were excited to try it out! The game is in a fairly small box and consists of two black boards with slots on and the letters A-F down the side, and numbers 1-6 along the top. For the 2 player game you each take a board and then before play starts, someone rolls all 7 dice together. These show you where to put your round wooden counters on the boards, and then the game begins! The idea is to fit all the other coloured wooden shapes on to your board as quickly as possible, working out which way to fit them altogether! Whoever gets there first – wins! The instructions tell me that there are 62,208 possible combinations of how the dice can fall, so it is unlikely you will ever play the same game twice. It is a simple concept and quick to play, but can provide hours of fun – especially if you are as competitive as myself and my husband! My 6 year old boy and 7 year old girl also really enjoyed playing however, and even my 2 year old loved to play his own version of the game just fitting in the pieces to make pretty patterns! You can also play this game on your own – which is great when the kids need occupying while I am busy or their siblings don’t want to play with them.
I would say this is made to a decent level of quality. In my opinion it is a shame that the playing boards are made out of plastic rather than something more eco-friendly, but the playing pieces are wooden and give the impression of being hardwearing. Each of the boards, set up with their playing pieces, came individually shrink wrapped in plastic inside the box. While this kept them protected from being damaged before it got to us, perhaps a more snug box design would achieve the same objective. Having said that, the box doesn’t take up too much room in our games cupboard and it will last our children as they grow older, reducing waste. The colours are vibrant and it’s a simple concept to get your head around so your children are not waiting for hours of for you to read and explain complicated instructions! The Happy Puzzle Company have won many awards for their toys, and they are also bringing out an XL version of this game and have a genius star version of the same concept plus similar games for younger children, so it’s definitely worth having a look at their website and choosing the right version for your family. The game is aimed at age 6+ which I would agree with (unless you go for alternative ways of playing!), and it is great for getting their brains working and away from screen time. I would definitely recommend this game and think the price is reasonable for the quality and durability of the game.
