As always the staff were welcoming and friendly and the entrance into the Mayflower was clean and accessible.  There is adequate parking within the multi storey car park which is just behind the theatre.  All in all a superb venue to visit, one of my favourites.

This stage version of The Commitments musical (adapted from the novel by Booker prize winning author Roddy Doyle, which has also been made into a movie) began by telling a good story of how the band began, got together and how the music scene was in Ireland back in those days. The story went on to show them playing their first gig in a local community centre but didn’t show if they’d actually made it in the music business or became that famous.

There was a lot of swearing which I am not a fan of. A few comedy moments but I think the saving grace of the show was the talent on the actors – musicians. The cast unquestionably worked hard and their voices were of a tremendous quality and very enjoyable. The end blasted out the tunes one after another and provided a feel good atmosphere which got the crowd energised, up on their feet and dancing. The show features over 20 soul classics including Mustang Sally, Try A Little Tenderness, River Deep Mountain High, In The Midnight Hour, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, and lots more!

What really came across in the show is how the band members had such extreme personality clashes during rehearsals, with members leaving on several occasions, but when it came to the performances their talents really come together to belt out amazing soulful tunes.

Overall I think it could have been written better but a good ‘gig’ to go and listen to some talented musicians.

Rating: 4/5
