Captivating, emotional and breath-taking – an award-winning performance that was worthy of the standing ovation.
A true nostalgic production that took me back to watching the 1992 blockbuster at the cinema (I am showing my age!).
The opening scenes had everyone pinned back in their seats and with a true “grammy” style welcome. This feeling did not stop throughout the show.
The first act brought the character to life with the gradual introduction of the Stalker (expertly portrayed by Marios Nicolaides), who really made me feel cold inside with him lurking in the shadows of Rahel Marron played by Samantha Mbolekwa, and her security and love interest Frank Farmer (played by Ayden Callaghan. The way in which the scenes, narrative and songs rolled together seamlessly supported by strong choreography. This is a true west end, professional show with no inch of set or music not thought through.
The second act became a compelling watch, as the intensity of the Stalker hit a new level, and the risk of the love becoming a fatal attraction. The music, lyrics and dancing created a palpable atmosphere.
The scenes and stage interchanges took you on Rachel’s journey; you felt you was sat in the bar with them, in the audience watching a rock star, or just peering in through their windows being nosey.
I truly felt for Rachel’s sister, Nicki Marron (played by Emily Mae) and her feelings of being pushed aside for her sisters successful singing career. The way in which Nicki reacted in the scenes drew the audiences attention, which were only heightened by a truly authentic, and beautiful voice, which was pitch perfect and brought her role alive. You could see the happiness in the character, and maybe Emily-Mae herself by singing, and the feeling of freedom it provides to express yourself.
I have to admit, at the very start, I felt the vocals were not as strong, but as the show moved on, the vocals of Emily-Mae and Samantha Mbolekwa ignited the show, which became an immersive experience for my emotions, I even had tears in my eyes when the last song ended!
A special mention needs to go to Kaylenn Aires Fonseca, playing the role of cheeky Flether. His acting, dance and singing were phenomenal, pure talent at its finest. His confidence, portrayal of the role was beyond his years. A true star performer to look out for.
I absolutely loved my evening at the Regent Theatre watching The Bodyguard The Musical, I was singing and toe tapping along. The “karaoke girls” added a lovely humorous element to the show, and collectively with the whole production have created a must-watch show.
Aa a caution, I should mention that there are short periods where there are flashing lights which were very bright, and so for anyone with sensitivities to these, I would recommend calling ahead, as I think there will be seating which would not be as greatly affected.
Rating: A 5 out of 5, must watch for all show.
