I’ve become increasingly interested in skincare as I age, things which help with those signs of age, those deepening lines and the dryness which seems to creep up. And which focuses less on long multi-step routines and more on concentrated, purposeful ingredients.

That is partly why Frøya Organics caught my attention and I was interested to review The Complete System for Mature Women’s Skin is built around a relatively simple philosophy. Arctic botanicals, concentrated balms, no water fillers and a routine designed to support mature skin without requiring a dedicated spreadsheet to keep track of it. The set includes a day balm, night balm, eye balm and exfoliating powder scrub, all centred around rich oils, beeswax and plant extracts rather than the lightweight and water based products we’ve been sold in younger years.

This system is very different to much of what’s available on the high street these days. These products are substantial, rich and dense. They feel more like treatment balms than conventional moisturisers and I think reactions to that will depend heavily on skin type and personal preference.

Many of the Frøya ingredients are chosen for resilience. The Arctic plant concept could easily seem like a marketing gimmick to many but it does have science behind it. Plants surviving harsh Nordic conditions develop powerful protective compounds and Frøya’s formulations focus on oils, botanicals, arnica, rosehip, marigold, chamomile, pomegranate and squalane rather than relying on long ingredient lists packed with preservatives, synthetic fragrance and fillers.

The Day Glow Balm is probably the most divisive product in the set. Some users absolutely adore the healthy, nourished glow it gives and report that their skin appears brighter, smoother and more hydrated. Others find the yellow-gold colour too much and describe an orange cast if over-applied. It does cast a giddy brightness at first but when massaged in there is a subtle glow which remains.

Personally, I think this is one of those products where application matters enormously. Looking at both positive and negative reviews, there seems to be a consistent pattern. People who use a tiny amount often report a healthy radiance. People who apply it more generously sometimes describe looking as though they have lost a fight with fake tan. I used a tiny bit and it did great to cover the distance across my face.

The Night Balm is where I suspect many mature skins will find the greatest appeal. It contains rosehip and rich botanical oils aimed at supporting overnight repair. Again, it is realistically nourishing. If you enjoy waking up feeling as though your skin has been wrapped in moisture rather than stripped bare, this is likely to appeal. If you dislike any residual richness whatsoever, perhaps less so. It’s so rich it lingers, but then I have relatively greasy skin so others might find it vanishes. These ingredients are the optimised possibilities for older skin and it’s factual and researched.

The Eye Balm is one of the more interesting products in the range because it focuses heavily on hydration and barrier support around an area that tends to reveal fatigue rather quickly. Several users specifically mention improvements in puffiness, brightness and overall appearance around the eyes, although as always with skincare, results vary enormously between individuals. I haven’t seen any difference in the darkness around my eyes, but I’m only a week in, there’s time yet.

The powder exfoliant is probably my favourite concept in the system. Rice flour, rose flour and apricot kernel powder create a scrub which is activated with water when needed. There is something reasonably old-fashioned about it. It avoids preservatives required in water-based scrubs and allows the user to control the consistency. It also feels rather more elegant than the aggressive face scrubs many of us attacked ourselves with in the early 2000s before research in skincare moved on a little.

One thing I appreciate is that Frøya appears to understand something many skincare brands are claiming as miraculous. Mature skin is not necessarily asking for miracles, much as we might want them, but comfort and ease really helps. Most women simply want their skin to look healthy, supported and hydrated.

That said, I would be wary of treating any skincare as miraculous. Age happens no matter what products we use but Frøya will certainly help retain moisture because it holds it in the skin. The scent in minimal and natural, coming from the naturalistic products contained within. It’s faint and inoffensive.

These are thick unctuous products and they won’t suit everyone, but if you have exceptionally dry skin it’s probably going to make a big difference. This in turn will also speed up recovery in some skin types.

For me, the strongest aspect of Frøya is not necessarily the anti-ageing promise. It is the commitment to rich, concentrated formulations which prioritise nourishment and barrier support. In a beauty industry often obsessed with stripping, resurfacing, correcting and attacking the skin into submission, there is something rather refreshing about products which seem more interested in feeding it.

The Complete System for Mature Women’s Skin feels luxurious in a slightly unusual way. Not glossy luxury but rich in textures, botanicals, oils and a certain naturalistic quality which feels distinctly different from mainstream skincare.

Will it work for everyone? Of course not. Nothing does. But if you enjoy natural skincare, appreciate richer balm textures and want a routine that feels focused on nourishment rather than complexity, I can absolutely understand why so many women have become devoted to it. Just remember that with products this concentrated, a little really does appear to go a very long way. Which is fortunate because it’s expensive for the whole range. It might seem disconcerting to receive four small jars for over £100 but I can see it’ll last and last. Probably equal to, or perhaps longer than some of the pricey high street/department store skincare lines.

If your skin tolerates thicker products I’d say it’s worth trying. If you’re developing drier skin with age, again I’d say it’s probably worth trying. These will hold in the moisture and retain some of the water based plumping the skin benefits from.
