The best places to visit with a family over the Christmas period

Christmas is a time for relaxing, spending time with loved ones, and unwinding after a year of hard work. While the majority of us spend our Christmases at home, cuddled up in front of the sofa with a glass of hot chocolate and a movie, there are other ways to celebrate. If you want to make this holiday season even more special, consider a Christmas mini-break. Here are some of the best places to visit this year…

If you really want to get into the Christmas spirit, then consider the medieval city of York. Its Christmas Festival takes place every year throughout November and December, giving you plenty of time to enjoy a glass of mulled wine and taste flavours from the festival’s diverse vendors. For young children, take part in the Ice Factor, where you can show off your ice-skating skills. Alternatively, walk through the historic streets themselves, where you’ll find stories and get lost in the nooks and crannies, which are packed with traditional shops, bakeries and restaurants.

It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world – and the perfect place to visit over the Christmas season. Not only does London give you the chance to stock up on Christmas presents, whether on Oxford Street or in one of the capital’s many shopping complexes, but you can sit down and take in a musical or two to get you in the Christmas spirit. This year, Dick Whittington is playing at the London Palladium, or you could take in the Arena Spectacular of Peter Pan at the SSE Arena. Aladdin, Cinderella and Disney on Ice are also options to consider, as recommends.

Although it’s typically a destination for a Great British summer holiday, Blackpool is a great idea for a pre-Christmas getaway. With a whole array of pubs and restaurants and a wide range of entertainment options – such as a theme park, water park, arcades, museums and its very own dungeons – Blackpool is great fun for the whole family. And, if you choose to stay in a cheap bed and breakfast, you’ll have money left over for your Christmas shopping.

The Gower Peninsula

If you like walking and want to reflect on your year surrounded by breath-taking beaches and ruins, The Gower Peninsula could be the ideal location for your pre-Christmas break. Just a short drive from Swansea, the Peninsula was named an Area of Outstanding Beauty more than sixty years ago, and now its stunning beaches and coastline attracts more than 4 million visitors a year.

There you have it – some of the places you should consider if you’re looking to go on holiday before Christmas. There are thousands of options to consider, both in the United Kingdom and further afield, so make sure you choose your research and find somewhere that keeps the whole family entertained. Wherever you end up, have a very Merry Christmas!
