This review was an easy one to sign up for; free alcohol to taste test. Shucks, the things I have to do for reviews… Over the weekend I tried it both with ginger ale and on its own with just ice.

This item is a banana and butterscotch flavoured rum liqueur. The bottle itself has an attractive, exotic looking label with a parrot and palm trees on. It has a lower ABV at 20% when compared to full strength rums. This was great for me as I’m not keen on alcohol that tastes of strong alcohol. I like cocktails, alcopops and alcohol that still tastes nice without an overpowering alcohol kick to it.

Both the banana and butterscotch flavours are obvious, with less of a rum taste and more of a sweet base. It reminds me a bit of banoffee pie, which is fine with me. I was worried that the banana flavouring, described as ‘sun-drenched tropical banana’ would be too fake and overpowering but it pairs well with the butterscotch flavour, described as ‘creamy-soft butterscotch’. I imagine it would be a good cocktail ingredient. I’m yet to try it as one, but that’s next on the list, maybe with girl friends once we’re allowed to socialise again as I’d imagine it would be a good cocktail base during a girly catch up (possibly with straws with pull out mini parrots on!).

I don’t like many spirits neat, as I don’t actually like the strong taste of alcohol (as mentioned) but this tasted nice just with ice as the flavours are sweet and strong without that overpowering alcohol taste. However, because of the flavouring I expect this won’t be for everyone. It’s also probably not for you if you’re expecting a strong taste of rum, as the overpowering flavours are the banana and the butterscotch with a sweet base that’s not overly rum like. I’d put it as more akin to my flavoured gin liqueurs and amaretto as sweet alcohol options than rum, which I think of as a rougher, stronger drink.

The bottle advises that it is good paired with cola, so I’m mentioning that as an option even though I haven’t tried it with that as I don’t like cola.

The Palm Beach brand is part of ICB brands, based in Harrogate. I prefer to buy UK based products where possible, so was pleased to discover this. Upon looking at their website I recognised quite a few of their products as those I have previously drunk and some I even have in my drinks cupboard currently. I’d guess that its introduction is as a rival to the many, many flavoured gin liqueurs now on the market, to provide a slightly different option.

With Mother’s day coming up this would make a great alternative gift to the standard flowers or chocolates. It’s available on Amazon as well as in Tesco so is easily deliverable during these lockdown times, either by post or as a doorstep drop off gift and it is under £10 a bottle so easily affordable too.

I give it 5/5 for being a drink that is right up my street as a sweet alcohol option.
