If you are looking for a gift for the lady in your life, you may have thought of a fitness tracker. Often just functional, but not stylish and understated, it’s where the Fitbit Luxe really comes into its own. It has all the functions you require but looks good enough to wear out to any occasion, not just the gym. Having had a fitness tracker back when they first came out, I was intrigued to see how they have improved, so was delighted to be sent the Fitbit Luxe to try out.
The Fitbit Luxe arrived well packed in a mobile phone size box, with a photograph of what looked like a modern slimline digital watch on the front, clearly branded with the words fitbit and luxe. Inside the box I found a really beautiful watch, a power charging cable, a second watch strap in a larger size and a book of quick set up instructions. What looked like a lovely watch was actually the fitbit luxe, it had a soft white rubbery strap, a black face and a gold faced stainless steel back & edges, it looked so sophisticated and modern, you wouldn’t think it was a fitness tracker.

On the inside of the box are the two options for set up, first the fitbit needs charging, then a new user needs to download the app, available for ios and android, and those already with an account can login and set up. I didn’t have an account, but it was extremely easy to download the ios version and set up. You need your height and weight, and date of birth as a minimum and you can add further data as you require. I was set up in a matter of minutes. Setting it up via the app sets the current time & date on the screen and it also input all my details without me having to do anything further. When you touch the screen, the time comes up for a second or two, together with your daily step count, heart rate or the date. Swipe up and you get the date, battery life and your step count, keep swiping up and you get the distance you have walked in km, calories burned, heart rates resting & active, and your hourly activity. You can get the app to send you notifications to remind you to do exercise or move around which I found really useful as I tend to get engrossed in excel spreadsheets and forget to take a break, resulting in a back ache. Swipe right and you can set an alarm, a timer, set a start and finish exercise session and see any notifications from the app.

You can also do lots of other set ups in the app to help you use the tracker to its full ability and it gives a full breakdown of your activity in a larger font than looking at the fitbit itself, so is great for a run through at the end of the day. It clearly shows basic information such as steps, distance and calories burned when you open the app. You can add to this information by producing a stress management score, this uses the results of your heart rate, sleep and activity. You can add a sleep log by setting the app to sleep as you go to bed and wearing the fitbit during the night. You can also set yourself mindfulness sessions, choosing how many days per week and a length of time to do a session, then you get a notification on the tracker, its like your wrist is buzzing, to remind you. A couple of other scarier things you can do is log the food you eat and water you drink, the calories soon rack up! You can then tie this in with a weight goal based on reducing from your current weight. You could log in and change your weight every day if you want to, or just weekly to see how you are doing.

If you are a competitive type, you can link your fitbit up to others by adding friends in the app, you can then track each other’s progress and send encouragement, great if a few of you all have a fitbit and you want to keep tabs on each other, or set a goal for you all to reach. All the functions listed above come totally free with the fitbit luxe, but you can also pay monthly for fitbit premium, the luxe version includes six months premium for free. This gives you extra workout, recipe and mindfulness sessions, and connects all your data, sleep, stress activity etc together to give you a full breakdown of your well being.

Basically, the fitbit luxe can be as basic or as a comprehensive as you want it to be, you can just have a very beautiful watch with step count and heart rate or you can have sleep information, calories counted, mindfulness sessions, competitions with your friends and much, much more. It may not be the cheapest product on the market, but as you would pay a similar price for a nice watch without any of the many additional function’s I think its pretty good value for money. The fitbit luxe is a fantastic gift for anyone young or old as its really easy to set up and use and reminds you to keep active.
