During the first lock-down, I became a bit of a curry alchemist. I had plenty of time studying the recipes and filling my kitchen racks with online sourced exotic herbs and spices. I spent numerous hours trying to recreate my favourite British Indian restaurant style curries.
Now we’re getting back to normal; finding that time is a little more challenging, if not impossible. But I’ve got a problem. I’ve developed a taste for and still love homemade curries. I find they’re healthier than my usual takeaways. I’ve gained complete control over all of the ingredients, especially the oil and fat content.
Because of my lock-down dabbling, I was a little sceptical when I was given the opportunity to sample and review the Curry Night Kit from Spice Pots. How wrong I was.
The decorative box contains four 40g recyclable steel tins of blended spices, namely Tandoori Masala, Bhuna, Korma, and an intriguing Goan. The kit is completed with a leaflet detailing eight recipes.
The spices can simply be added to your favourite base ingredients. They’re all vegan friendly and highly adaptable. If you want to be a little more adventurous, try one of the recommended recipes. There are many more on their website – they all seem very straightforward.
I initially opted for the Chicken Korma recipe, adapting the quantities from 6 people to 2. Although we love the creamy almond texture or a Korma, we also like our curries with a bit of a kick. Therefore I added a single dried birds-eye chilli to the fresh ginger and garlic. It was delicious, a creamy classic.
Next, I wanted to prove how simple you can keep things with this kit. After our Sunday roast, we had some leftover vegetables. So I added a few teaspoons of the Bhuna spice and placed it all in a slow cooker (no additional items) – again, it was delicious.
I already know that a Goan Fish Curry is on the menu next weekend, together with a Tandoori Chicken starter.
Have a look at their website https://www.spicepots.com. Not only will you find their full range of products, including a sweet spice, but you will immediately see that this is a company that care, not just about the product they are producing, but also in the way they are producing them. In addition, their environmental friendliness credentials are exemplary. I especially liked being able to buy individual refills for the pots (or a full refill set if desired).
This easy to use kit would make an ideal Christmas present for any hard to buy for friend or relative, especially if they’re a bit of a foodie.
On their website, the team behind Spice Pots each name their ‘Desert Island Must Haves’. After sampling this Curry Night Kit, I think my ‘must-haves’ might just include some items from Spice Pots. Then again, if I were stuck on an island, that precious time would be restored, and I could practice my curry alchemy once again – what a dilemma! Nope, not much of a decision really, Spice Pots would win. I’d be content relaxing in my hammock while reading a good book knowing a lovely curry was bubbling away on the stove.
