Aldi Festive Family Meal Review

Reviewed by Ellie Price

Well we are are now into December and the festival season so we were asked to review a festive meal from Aldi’s festive food range. Upon receiving vouchers to try to Aldi festive food range, I was very excited to see what food they had to offer in store. We headed straight out to our local Aldi store to find the festive food. We decided that we would have a started, main and a desert to treat ourselves and to get into the Christmas spirit after decorating our Christmas tree.

We decided that for the starter we would buy the smoked salmon roulade, which we could then serve into starter sized portions accordingly. For our main course we chose the 5 bird roast with studding. And for desert we decided on the banoffee pie. To accompany the main we also bought a selection of seasonal vegetables (carrots, sprouts and broccoli), some frozen goose fat roast potatoes, frozen Yorkshire puddings and cranberry sauce.

The smoked salmon roulade was very easy to cut and did not fall apart upon serving, and the flavours of the smoked salmon were perfect.

The five bird roast (hand-prepared roast of turkey, duck, goose, pheasant and chicken layered with a pork, clementine and cranberry stuffing. Topped with bacon and a port and cranberry glaze £9.99) was able to be cooked from frozen which was convenient as it did not need to be defrosted and therefore went straight into the oven with the frozen roast potatoes. The vegetables were very good quality and extremely fresh with vibrant colours. Serving the five bird roast was a little difficult, however this is my own fault for not using a very sharp knife to cut into it. Upon eating our main course the flavours of the five bird roast were stunning, with the stuffing and cranberry sauce complementing the roast perfectly.

To finish off we had the banoffee pie which we had left out to defrost on its own. This was a highlight of the meal, and left us wanting more of it to eat. The toffee and banana were a perfect combination together.

We severed the meal with a bottle of Aldi Chardonnay which was a beautiful bottle of wine. As a fussy wine drinker I was sceptical about the ALDI wine, however the flavours of the wine complemented the meal perfectly. And most importantly the wine was not overly acidic.

Overall the Aldi food was excellent quality for a very reasonable price and I will definitely be purchasing more festive food this year.
