Since receiving the Edurino starter set, my nearly six-year-old daughter has been able to navigate and complete the tasks with her original ‘Yuki’ character and has really engaged with it. Whilst playing she has been keen to share with me all the ‘tasks’ that she has completed and has loved seeing her work on display in the home area of artist street.
She was delighted when she received her second character, Ari.
Like Yuki, the character is well designed and appealing to her love of animals. The figurine is robust and good quality and easily held and controlled by her little hands. She instantly knew how to navigate through the game and bring Ari to life within it.
Ari’s character focuses on ‘My Body Parts’ and their research station has a great range of games to complete that have a clear educational focus. The other characters in the game, which my daughter described as “scientists,” narrate the stages of the interactive activities well. I think this is an excellent feature of the app – the introduction of vocabulary that is informative and relevant. Within the context of the individual games, I am certain that she will be learning new information that is supporting her understanding of biology.
So far, she has completed just a few of the activities – there are several more that she is yet to unlock which I believe happens as she makes progress through the research station. I say this because even though I am observing how she is using it my daughter has a better grasp of it than me and she has picked up easily how it all works and how to unlock the new games.
Another great feature is the sense of humour that comes through the characters – the scientist detailing the different body parts gives a little fact about each and I love the useful tips that he shares like “you mustn’t put your finger up your nose too often!” which raised a smile with my daughter – but is also helpful to hear and is delivered in a friendly and informative way.
In the short time that my daughter has been using the app I have noticed that her control of the magic pen has improved. It helps that the design of the pen supports the use of a pincer grip – the correct way to hold it to gain good pencil control, and I think this will be a good transferable skill when she returns to taking pen to paper.
Overall, I really like the design of the App, the figurines, and the magic pen. It is all very considerate of the needs and skills of a young child and at nearly six I think my daughter is the right age to be getting the most out of it. I will be seriously considering buying more of the figurines – and will be recommending them to family and friends.
Previously I have not been a fan of many games on the tablet and have actively discouraged screen time in favour of physical and creative play. However, I recognise that for my child’s generation the skills that she is gaining from a high-quality game like Edurino will be hugely beneficial to her future progress in IT, which will play a big part in her education and her life.
Time and money well spent!
